The labels bought equity, not just injunctions, in Stability AI's $76mn round
Universal, Warner and Sony Music now own a piece of the company selling licensed music models. The money funds a narrower Stability: professional tooling, sold through a plugin.
The Product Desk

What happened
- Universal, Warner and Sony Music all took equity in Stability AI's $76mn Series B, alongside Electronic Arts, AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures.
- Universal signed a co-development alliance with Stability in October 2025 and Warner followed a month later.
- Stability's Stable Audio 3.0, launched in May, is open-weight and trained on what the company says is fully licensed data.
Why it matters
- decision Two of the three labels have already sued or settled with generative audio firms; owning shares in one of them turns a copyright question into a shareholder question, and makes suing this...
- constraint A vendor whose customers are also its shareholders has little room to sell to anyone those shareholders would rather not serve, which limits Stability's audio business to the professional tier its...
- exposure Electronic Arts is committing capital to tooling while carrying buyout debt, which makes it the least reliable name on the register if the AI budget meets the interest bill.
- contradiction TechCrunch reads Stability's court record as a mostly winning stretch after the UK Getty ruling, while the other account stresses that copyright claims elsewhere in the business remain live; the...
Seventy-six million dollars does not buy a frontier training run, and the use-of-funds list does not pretend it will: a creative production product suite, a deeper applied research discipline, and a bigger professional services arm [4]. It is roughly a third of everything Stability has raised under Prem Akkaraju since June 2024 [20]. TechCrunch's reading of the register is the useful one, that this is less a venture round than a list of the companies Stability now depends on for content licensing and distribution [14]. Money that arrives from your suppliers tends to come with opinions about the roadmap.
What those suppliers get access to is a distribution position. Stable Audio 3.0, launched in May, is a family of open-weight models the company says were trained on fully licensed data and can produce professional-grade tracks running past six minutes [10]. Musicians reach them through a digital audio workstation plugin or on the web [11]. The plugin is the part with commercial consequence, because it puts a licensed tool inside the software producers are already sitting in, which is the only place a licensed tool can beat a free one on convenience rather than on argument.
Stability said as much in its own release: responsibly trained models are critical but not enough on their own, and artist-centric AI will only win if the experience on a licensed platform beats the experience on an unlicensed one [15]. Read plainly, that concedes the unlicensed tools currently work well enough that people use them. The labels are funding a product fight they have so far been running as a legal one. A German court ruled against Suno in July, the first such decision in Europe [16], and Universal settled its own suit against Udio before it partnered with Stability [17].
Sony Music is the interesting name. Universal signed a strategic alliance in October 2025 to co-develop AI music tools, and Warner followed the next month [6]; Sony appears among the new investors but not among the strategic partners Stability lists [9]. Equity with no announced co-development deal is the cheapest available seat. It costs less than a licence and less than a trial, and it still buys sight of what the other two are building.
The company those cheques land in is a smaller proposition than the one that started in London. Stable Diffusion went out from there in August 2022, has been downloaded more than 350mn times, and grew an entire tools ecosystem on top of itself; the office it came from is closed [21]. Stability now describes itself as a maker of purpose-built AI products for professional creatives in music, gaming and entertainment [5]. That is a business with a named customer list, and three of the names on it are also on the cap table [2].
What to watch
- Whether Sony Music converts its equity into a catalogue or co-development deal, or holds the stake as a hedge.
- The Getty Images case still running in the United States, where a different result from the UK judgment would reprice the licensed pitch.
- Whether Stable Audio stays open-weight now that three rights holders are also shareholders.
