Spotify re-signs Joe Rogan on licence terms that keep his show on YouTube and Apple

Spotify signed a new multi-year licence for Joe Rogan's podcast, about $250 million per the Wall Street Journal, that leaves the show running on other apps. For teams pricing creator deals, it is a bet that a show can pay back its fee on one platform while its audience listens on several.

What happened

  • The Joe Rogan Experience came to Spotify in 2020 and later became exclusive to it, an arrangement Rogan ended in 2024.
  • Variety reported that the new deal is similar to the one Rogan signed with Spotify in early 2024.
  • The show launched in December 2009 and has published more than 2,500 episodes, each averaging two to three hours, according to Variety.

Why it matters

  • decision Teams bidding for a host who already tops rival apps can now point to Spotify paying without exclusivity, so the negotiation turns on what the ad rights are worth.
  • precedent Other top hosts have a public example of Spotify paying what Variety called a nine-figure sum while the show stays on YouTube and Apple, and can ask for the same terms.
  • exposure Because Spotify sells the ads, it is the company advertisers deal with on a show The Verge says has drawn controversy, including 2024 campaign stops by Donald Trump and JD Vance.

A listener who wants this week's Joe Rogan Experience can get it without opening Spotify. New episodes post on Spotify each week and on other platforms as well [3], and since the 2024 deal those platforms have included YouTube and Apple Podcasts [4]. Spotify is paying to keep that arrangement under a new multi-year agreement [1].

Teams that buy exclusives tell themselves listeners will follow a host to a new app. This audience, given the choice, kept listening on every major app: in 2025 the show was the top podcast on Spotify, YouTube and Apple Podcasts, according to Variety [7]. Spotify's own announcement leads with a different number, 18 million followers [5]. A follow is one tap. For a deal that has to pay back through advertising, hours listened inside Spotify and what advertisers pay for them would be a better guide to value.

Both sides describe the deal as a partnership. "Spotify's podcast business has grown alongside JRE over the years, and we're excited to keep building on that partnership for years to come," said Jordan Newman, Spotify's head of content partnerships [11]. What Spotify is buying is more specific. Variety reported that under the agreement Spotify handles ad sales and licensing for the show [10]. Rogan keeps every platform and gets paid [14]. "The partnership with Spotify has been an amazing fit, and they're incredible to work with," he said [12]. Spotify gets an ad product to sell and a weekly episode inside its app [3][10].

Terms were not disclosed [6]. The $250 million figure traces to one outlet. The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources, reported an estimated earnout of that size for Rogan over the term, according to Variety [14]. The Verge cited the Journal for a value of around $250 million [15]. With the term stated only as multi-year [1], the figure cannot be turned into a yearly cost.

The evidence covers one show on one platform. It shows what Spotify chose for its most-followed podcast [5], and it is too thin to call this the way every top show will now be kept.

For a team pricing a creator deal, the renewal suggests a two-by-two. One axis is whether the host already leads on rival apps. The other is whether the deal hands you a revenue line you control, such as ad sales. When both hold, as they do for JRE [10][7], a non-exclusive licence is the better buy, and the tradeoff is that listeners keep the option of hearing the show somewhere else. When the host leads on rivals and the deal carries no ad rights, the money buys a weekly slot in your app. Price that slot against measured retention of the people who come for the show. When the audience sits mostly on your app, exclusivity costs little reach to ask for. Without ad rights in that corner, exclusivity is the only thing you are buying, so pay for it only if you can show those listeners would leave with the host.

What to watch

  • Whether Spotify or Rogan discloses the length of the agreement, so the reported $250 million can be read as a yearly cost.
  • Any other top podcast Spotify signs on non-exclusive terms with ad sales rights; a second case would show the JRE structure is a pattern.
  • Spotify reporting listening hours or ad revenue tied to JRE, the figures that would show whether the fee pays back.
