What happened

  • Against the same quarter a year earlier, daily settlements are still up 29.4%, from 27.355 trillion won, after a second-quarter peak of 42.396 trillion won that was a record.
  • Stock settlements averaged 8.78 trillion won a day, down 12.4% from 10.021 trillion won in the second quarter and up 288.9% from 2.258 trillion won a year earlier.
  • Settlements of corporate bonds maturing in a year or less fell 37.8%, from 10.512 trillion won a day to 6.544 trillion won, according to Seoul Economic Daily's account of the depository's data.
  • Off-exchange stock settlements by institutions averaged 4.683 trillion won a day, down 16.9%, while trading value in that segment fell 26.4% to 45.366 trillion won.

Why it matters

  • contradiction Seoul Economic Daily puts the stock correction first in its explanation, yet bond lines hold 82% of the decline, so the equity market is the smaller driver of this print.
  • constraint Settlement totals understate the equity downturn, because a shrinking netting ratio props up settled value as trading thins. Anyone using them as a proxy for stock turnover will misjudge it.
  • exposure Bonds carry about three times the weight of stocks in the total (75.2% against 24.8%), so a given percentage move in bond settlements shifts the headline three times as far.

The quarter's fall is 6.987 trillion won a day: the second-quarter record of 42.396 trillion less the third-quarter 35.409 trillion [1][12]. Stocks supply only 1.241 trillion of that, or 17.8% [13]. Bonds supply 5.746 trillion [14]. Inside bonds, one line does most of the damage, because settlements of corporate bonds maturing in a year or less lost 3.968 trillion won a day, 57% of the whole decline [15].

Yonhap, reporting the same release on Monday, gave only the totals [3]. The line-by-line detail comes from Seoul Economic Daily, which attributes the short-term bond drop to wider interest rate swings and a sharp weakening in institutions' demand for short-term funding [19][20]. The obvious substitute did not pick up the volume: settlements of certificates of deposit and commercial paper edged up 0.1% to 4.815 trillion won [7]. Whatever institutions stopped doing in one-year corporate paper, they did not do it in CDs and CP instead.

The exchange-traded stock line behaves differently. Its trading value fell 34.1%, from 117.231 trillion won to 77.28 trillion [8], yet its settlements fell only 6.6%, to 4.097 trillion won a day [9]. The netting ratio, the share of payments offset after trades are matched, was 94.7% [10], and that ties the two figures together: 4.097 trillion is 5.3% of 77.28 trillion, the share left after 94.7% is offset [17]. Run the second quarter backwards (settlements of about 4.387 trillion against 117.231 trillion of trading value) and the implied netting ratio is about 96.3% [21]. If so, the offset share fell about 1.6 points as trading thinned, and that cushioned the settlement line. This is our inference, and it assumes both quarters' trading values are measured the same way.

We think the quarter is mostly a short-term funding adjustment, or rather one line of it, with a smaller equity correction on top. Two things cut against that. The second-quarter base was a record, so part of any fall from it is reversion. And on the year-on-year comparison the roles swap: stocks supply 6.522 trillion won of the 8.054 trillion gain, or 81%, and bonds 1.532 trillion [16].

The funding view fails if corporate bonds maturing within a year climb back toward their second-quarter level in the fourth quarter while rates keep swinging as widely.

What to watch

  • Whether CD and commercial paper settlements, flat at 4.815 trillion won this quarter, start absorbing the short-term volume that left corporate bonds.
  • The exchange netting ratio in the next release: a return toward 96% with trading value flat would pull stock settlements down faster than the 6.6% seen in Q3.
