Safari Technology Preview 254 fixes four accessibility bugs and two broken animations
Safari Technology Preview 254 fixes four accessibility bugs and two animation bugs, among them VoiceOver announcing every focused ARIA menu item as selected. Teams carrying workarounds for any of them now have a build to test their removal against.
The Engineer · Build desk
What happened
- Accelerated animations of opacity to 0, scroll-driven ones included, could leave elements fully visible instead of transparent until 322355@main.
- View timeline animations froze once a sticky-positioned inline ancestor stuck to the scroll container, a bug fixed in 321094@main.
- The build also adds interpolate-size, which lets animations and transitions run to and from auto, min-content and fit-content.

Why it matters
- constraint Two of the accessibility fixes are scoped to iOS and this preview installs on macOS Golden Gate and Tahoe, so it cannot confirm that an iOS-side workaround is safe to remove.
- exposure On builds without 322397@main, VoiceOver users of ARIA menus with checkbox or radio items hear "selected" on every focused item, so the announcement cannot tell them which option is checked.
- capability Each fix ships with a WebKit commit identifier and a bug number, so a team can check whether a given Safari build includes a change before deleting the workaround for it.
I'd retest 322472@main first [4]. Of the six accessibility and animation fixes, it is the only one where VoiceOver could not activate a control at all [17]. The bug let a CSS property meant for pointer input block a screen reader's press action on buttons, links and form controls [4].
The iOS error-message bug had a dry sort of thoroughness. A message built from several pieces of text was read in reverse order, with some of it repeated [6]. VoiceOver on iOS also failed to identify date, time and color inputs as pop-up buttons [3].
The animation fixes only show up under specific conditions, and a retest has to reproduce them. The opacity note limits the bug to accelerated animations [8]. A test page that never takes the accelerated path could pass on an affected build too. For the view timeline fix, the page needs a sticky-positioned inline ancestor and enough scroll for that ancestor to stick to the scroll container [7].
The build covers WebKit's main branch from 321068@main to 322634@main [2], a span of 1,566 identifiers [14]. The notes do not say which stable Safari release will pick these changes up. That gap matters most for the new features. Alongside interpolate-size, the build adds calc-size(), which allows calculations on intrinsic sizes such as auto, fit-content and max-content [10]. Both are listed as new features [9][10]. I'd keep them behind @supports on production pages until a stable release lists them.
Pages that reorder many grid items get a separate fix. Grid relayout cost had grown quadratically with the number of items carrying distinct order values [11].
What to watch
- Which stable Safari release notes first list 322472@main and 322397@main, the pointer-events and menu-item VoiceOver fixes.
- Whether an iOS beta carries 321384@main and 322318@main, the two VoiceOver fixes the notes scope to iOS.
- Whether interpolate-size and calc-size() move from Technology Preview into a stable Safari release.

- [13]
The release notes list four resolved accessibility issues and two resolved animation issues.
- [14]
The WebKit range in this build spans 1,566 identifiers on main.
