Robinhood Chain logged 62% of its third-quarter DEX volume in a subsidized September

Robinhood Chain's 30-day DEX volume of $38.62 billion passed Base's $30.46 billion, according to Defillama data. Its third-quarter results will take in a September when Robinhood covered gas on some swaps, and none of the slower October.

What happened

  • Defillama puts Robinhood Chain's all-time DEX volume at roughly $111.97 billion, past $100 billion about 3.5 months after the July 1 mainnet launch.
  • Uniswap V3 carries about $46.94 billion of all-time volume and V4 another $36.35 billion, with the trading bot GMGN next at about $6.53 billion.
  • A Market Periodical breakdown puts the chain's stablecoin market cap above $1 billion, real-world asset holdings above $324 million and total fees above $46 million.

Why it matters

  • contradiction The four monthly totals add up to $104.92 billion, $7.05 billion short of the $111.97 billion all-time figure, so the milestone and the monthly series are not counting the same thing.
  • constraint Two Uniswap versions carry about 74% of all-time volume, and an analysis found more than 80% of volume through late July was memecoin trading, so the headline total says little about the tokenized stocks the chain was built for.
  • exposure News.bitcoin.com says the slowdown will matter for Robinhood's stock: the $130 average analyst target sits 18.5% above HOOD's recent $109.70, and the late-October report is the next data point.

The 27% lead over Base [17] comes from a 30-day window that, two weeks into October, still holds about 16 days of September [19]. The gas offer for qualifying Robinhood Wallet swaps ran until Sept. 29 [8]. Base's $30.46 billion [3] works out to about $14.2 billion per 14 days if spread evenly [16], and Robinhood Chain's first two weeks of October came in at about $14.25 billion [4]. Level, in other words, if Base traded steadily through its window.

Robinhood's third-quarter results, due in late October, are the first to cover a full quarter of mainnet trading [10]. Added up, that quarter holds $90.67 billion of volume [11], and September's $55.99 billion is about 62% of it [12]. We think the report will show the chain at its most assisted, and that October's daily rate, 41% below September's [14], is the better guide to what Robinhood owns without paying for it. The counter-thesis has its own numbers. At $1.1 billion a day [9], October would total $34.1 billion over 31 days [20], or 1.76 times August's $19.37 billion [21]. And an offer that covered only qualifying Wallet swaps [8] cannot explain the whole drop, so part of it may be an ordinary fade from a spike. A third outcome is that October keeps sliding and September stays the peak.

Revenue is where the conversion has to show. Fees above $46 million [6] on $111.97 billion of volume [1] come to about 4.1 basis points [15]. The fees and the volume come from different data sources, and the article does not define total fees or say how much of them Robinhood keeps, so the ratio is a rough floor. The only split it gives is the 10% of protocol net revenue the chain sends back to the Arbitrum ecosystem, 8% to the Arbitrumdao treasury and 2% to the Arbitrum Developer Guild [7].

By letting the offer lapse, Robinhood stopped paying the gas on those swaps [8], and October's pace is what the chain does without that spending. We would be wrong if daily volume climbs back above September's $1.87 billion [9] with no new offer running, or if the chain revenue Robinhood reports per dollar traded comes in well above those 4.1 basis points.

What to watch

  • Whether Robinhood's late-October Q3 release breaks out chain revenue, and at what rate per dollar of volume traded.
  • Whether Defillama's daily Robinhood Chain volume holds near $1.1 billion or falls through it as the last September days leave the 30-day window.
  • Whether Robinhood announces another gas offer for Wallet swaps, which would show volume being bought again.
