Ripple Prime opens weekend swaps on 100-plus markets that reference Hyperliquid perpetuals

Ripple Prime opened 24/7 perpetual swaps on more than 100 traditional markets to institutions on October 15, with Virtu among its clients. The swaps reference perpetual futures that Trade.xyz lists on Hyperliquid, so the weekend price they track is set on a crypto venue.

What happened

  • Ripple Prime acts as principal and clearing partner on trades executed on Hyperliquid through Trade.xyz, sitting between its clients and the onchain venue.
  • Clients can cross-margin RWA swap positions against other supported asset classes and post RLUSD as collateral, subject to jurisdictional availability.
  • The service runs under Ripple Prime's CIV BVI license for now, and Ripple Prime plans to extend it to additional jurisdictions.

Why it matters

  • Who's exposed exposure Ripple Prime is the single counterparty on leveraged positions that can move at any hour, so a weekend move in a referenced market tests its margin arrangements as well as the client's.
  • Who has to decide decision A firm that wants weekend exposure now chooses between its own route to Hyperliquid and Ripple Prime's single margin pool, and the second choice means taking Ripple Prime as counterparty.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction The open interest total is market-wide, so how much institutional weekend volume the new swaps carry is unmeasured and the price-discovery reading is an inference.

Ripple supplies the credit, the margin and the licence; Hyperliquid supplies the price [4][14][7][2]. We think that makes this a distribution arrangement for a price that already existed, or rather, distribution plus a balance-sheet commitment, because the single-counterparty structure puts Ripple Prime on the other side of every client's swap [14]. Michael Higgins, Ripple Prime's international CEO, framed it as a junction: "RWA swaps are where traditional and digital markets meet," he said [10].

The only volume figure in the coverage belongs to the whole market. Crypto Briefing reported that open interest in RWA perpetuals across major platforms rose to $9 billion over the past year, starting from near zero [12]. Ripple said volumes had grown substantially this year and supplied no specific figures [13]. A 1% share of that $9 billion would be $90 million of open interest [17], and a 10% share would be $900 million [18].

Virtu is the only client named in either account [3]. Scotte Moegling, its head of business development for digital assets, put the draw in terms of capital: "Virtu is ramping up across emerging liquidity pools, and Ripple Prime's 24/7 cross-margining across asset classes helps us expand our presence more efficiently as markets move toward 'round-the-clock access," he said [8]. Cross-margining lets a trader use one pool of collateral to back positions in several markets at once [9], so the saving Moegling describes accrues to a firm running books across many of them.

Clients reach Hyperliquid through Ripple's brokerage and do not have to trade on the venue directly [5]. Crypto Briefing's explanation is that many institutions want the benefits of onchain markets without handling the operational work themselves [15]. The cost of that convenience falls first on Ripple Prime, which acts as principal [4].

If Virtu stays the only named client and Ripple's slice stays near the 1% case, the launch is a product announcement. If a second name arrives, which Crypto Briefing lists as an open question [16], and Ripple Prime's share approaches the 10% case, the argument that crypto venues now form weekend prices for equities, oil and currencies would hold. In our view the first case fits the evidence today: the service runs under one licence, CIV BVI, with other jurisdictions only planned [7], and RLUSD collateral is subject to jurisdictional availability [6]. A disclosed Ripple Prime share near $900 million, or a second named client, would be the evidence against us.

What to watch

  • Any Ripple disclosure of Ripple Prime's own swap volume or open interest, which would place it against the 1% ($90 million) and 10% ($900 million) cases.
  • A second named institutional client beyond Virtu.
  • Extension of the service beyond the CIV BVI license, and the jurisdictions where RLUSD collateral becomes available.
