EQX Labs plans 11 tokenized US stock and ETF markets on Hyperliquid at zero issuer fees

EQX Labs plans to list 11 tokenized US stocks and ETFs on Hyperliquid's order book, backed 1:1 by shares and traded around the clock against USDC. Trading has not started and no launch date is set, so the depth those books will draw is still unknown.

What happened

  • The initial list covers Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Tesla, Micron and SpaceX, plus ETFs tracking the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100.
  • Backing shares are held in the issuer's name at Alpaca Securities, StoneX Financial and Clear Street, all connected to the Depository Trust Company.
  • Holders get exposure through a debt instrument, with no direct equity ownership or shareholder rights against the underlying companies.
  • The issuer charges nothing to create, redeem or hold the tokens and keeps no dividend proceeds; its revenue is a share of Hyperliquid's standard spot trading fees.
  • The tokens are not offered to US persons, people located in the United States, British Virgin Islands residents or sanctioned persons.

Why it matters

  • Who's exposed exposure A holder who is not an eligible institution can leave only by selling into the order book, so the value they realise depends on how deep EQX's books turn out to be.
  • What it limits constraint Price discovery on these books can come only from non-US buyers, a narrower pool than the one that trades the underlying stocks.
  • What's now possible capability EQX plans to let tokens serve as collateral in lending markets and be hedged with equity perpetuals, so a position can be financed and offset without leaving Hyperliquid.

The legal chain is longer than the tickers EQSPY, EQQQQ, EQNVDA and EQSPCX suggest [3]. Holders own a note, or rather a limited-recourse note, issued by EQX SPC Ltd., a British Virgin Islands segregated portfolio company [6]. The EQX STAR Trust, a Cayman Islands purpose trust with independent governance, owns the issuer, and EQX Labs supplies technology under contract without being the issuer [6]. Each ticker has a separate portfolio holding its underlying shares [14].

Price and value come apart when redemption is shut. Creation and redemption are open only to authorized participants, in kind and at zero issuer cost, and the design supports tighter arbitrage during US market hours [22]. The tokens trade 24 hours a day, seven days a week [1]. Outside those hours the book sets the price with no redemption behind it. The token settles on-chain in under one second [21], while shares coming in from authorized participants are tracked separately and expected to clear by the following US business day [5]. None of the sources names an authorized participant.

Hyperliquid was already in equities before this announcement. It offers perpetual futures tied to stocks and indexes through Trade[XYZ] [11], xStocks put five tokenized US equities on HyperCore in August [12], and Ondo Finance has extended its tokenized stock infrastructure to HyperEVM [13]. Nine of EQX's 11 markets are single companies [17], and at least four of the 11 (Nvidia, Micron and the two index ETFs) duplicate assets in the xStocks launch [18].

The fee design is a puzzle. The sources do not give the size of the fee share EQX will receive. With creation, redemption, holding and dividends all free [10], that share is the issuer's only income, and it accrues only if the books trade. Crypto Briefing reports that EQX aims to compete through its custody structure and fee model [19], and Crowdfund Insider describes the structure as prioritizing transparency and cost efficiency relative to many prior tokenized equity products [23].

We see three ways this goes. Volume splits with xStocks and EQX collects a thin slice; or the zero-fee structure pulls arbitrageurs and the older pairs lose depth; or the books stay thin everywhere and the tokens drift from the shares outside US hours. We lean to the first, because EQX arrives second in four of its markets and its pitch is cost, which matters to a trader only once there is depth to trade. We would be wrong if EQSPY and EQQQQ hold a narrow gap to the funds overnight and still take volume from xStocks' S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 tokens. No EQX book exists yet, so depth is a forecast [9].

What to watch

  • The launch date, and the first-week depth of EQSPY and EQNVDA against xStocks' Nvidia and S&P 500 tokens.
  • The size of EQX's share of Hyperliquid spot fees, and whether daily custody reconciliations are published.
  • The gap between EQX tokens and the underlying shares outside US market hours, and the names of the authorized participants.
