Researcher says MediaMarkt records name Aqipa as supplier of a second modified Ledger

Researcher @0xJohannes_ says a second Ledger bought at a different MediaMarkt store has the same hidden cables and LTE module as his first. His account does not show where the tampering happened, so the Aqipa link names a supplier and locates no fault.

Johannes says the risk might spread to MediaMarkt MediaMarkt and Saturn stores that sell Ledger items, beside the estimated thefts and affected wallets in the CryptoBilis reseller case.

MediaMarkt and Saturn have over 1,000 stores selling Ledger items, and Johannes says the issue might spread. In the CryptoBilis case, thieves stole an estimated $93 million to $94.5 million, and on-chain experts found 315 to 521 wallets affected.

What happened

  • Johannes says MediaMarkt store records list Aqipa GmbH as the supplier of the stock he bought.
  • According to Johannes, MediaMarkt staff said the unit had not been returned by a customer, and that any Ledger a customer does return is sent directly back to the manufacturer.
  • Johannes wrote that Ledger's CTO was not sure whether Aqipa sits directly between Ledger and MediaMarkt.
  • The second device is going to Ledger for analysis, Johannes said.
  • After his Oct. 12 update, Ledger Support repeated that its systems and direct channels were not breached and that every confirmed case traces to CryptoBilis, without mentioning the second device.

Why it matters

  • exposure MediaMarkt and Saturn run over 1,000 stores in 11 countries, but the source places Aqipa's Ledger distribution in two of them, Germany and Austria, so reach depends on which stores Aqipa supplies.
  • contradiction Johannes says the supply chain is compromised in Europe, while Ledger's line covers confirmed cases and all of those trace to CryptoBilis. Both statements can hold until the second device is analyzed.
  • decision Johannes wants a recall. The source reports no recall or other European action from Ledger, so its next statement after the analysis is the first real signal.
  • decision Holders who bought outside Ledger's own store are left with Johannes's advice to check their devices, and the source does not say how a buyer would do that.

The physical half of the claim rests on a video Johannes filmed while opening the box [8]. The locational half is thinner. A supplier line in a retailer's records identifies who delivered the stock to the shelf; it does not identify who added the cables, and Johannes's own account does not show where any tampering happened [6].

There are three ways this resolves, and the sources do not let us choose between the first two. The modification could have entered upstream of Aqipa, which would tie the MediaMarkt units to whatever produced the CryptoBilis cases. It could have entered at or after Aqipa inside Europe, which is what Johannes asserts. He wrote in an Oct. 12 post on X: "I can confirm that the Ledger supply chain is compromised in Europe as well." [10] Or the units could be resealed returns, his first guess before staff ruled it out [12].

In our view the first two are likelier than the third. Two units from two stores, plus a staff statement that the unit was not a return, make a pattern that one resealed return cannot produce. We hold that loosely, because the staff statement reaches us through Johannes and analysis of the second device is still ahead [11]. If MediaMarkt's account of its returns handling turned out to be wrong, the third reading would be back in play.

The scale gap between the two cases is large. The European evidence is two purchases and the store records [5], against 315 to 521 affected wallets on the CryptoBilis side, according to on-chain experts [3]. Those cases carry estimated thefts of $93 million to $94.5 million [2], or roughly $178,500 to $300,000 per wallet [7].

The part Mark Karpelès found in a Nano X he bought in Malaysia (a cellular modem, an eSIM and a chip that could read what the screen showed) [4] could record a wallet's recovery words at setup and send them over a mobile network [16].

What to watch

  • Ledger's analysis of the second device: whether the hardware matches the cellular implant found in the CryptoBilis cases.
  • A statement from Aqipa or Ledger on whether Aqipa sits directly between Ledger and MediaMarkt.
  • A third modified unit from a retailer not supplied by Aqipa, which would move the likely point of entry upstream.
