Teams standardized on Cursor have until November 12, 2026 to prove a fallback works

The part of this that will cost somebody a week is the model picker. Cursor's dropdown is where a company's real dependency sits, and in most shops it was touched once, during setup, by whoever wrote the onboarding doc. Teams tell themselves their developers evaluate models per task. What developers do is accept the default and get on with the ticket, which means the default is a supplier relationship they never saw negotiated.

According to Mashable's account of OpenAI's blog post, the stated reason has nothing to do with how anyone uses Cursor. OpenAI said it could not be confident SpaceX would honor its terms of service, citing what it called a pattern of contract violations at Musk's companies ^[3], including an alleged breach by X and Musk's sworn admission earlier this year that xAI had violated those terms ^[4]. Model choice is pitched inside the tool as a feature, but what's actually being delivered is a supplier list that now moves with litigation history ^[7].

The date deserves care. OpenAI said it proposed Nov. 12, 2026 because that is the maximum notice window the agreement allows ^[2], which makes the date a ceiling rather than a target ^[11]. Cursor co-founder Michael Truell, now a SpaceX executive, says the company is talking to OpenAI about a resolution ^[5]; Musk said publicly that he "couldn't care less" and called Altman and Greg Brockman untrustworthy ^[10]. Those two signals don't give a rollout owner anything to plan against, so the only workable plan is the date printed on the notice ^[1].

The soft landing is already visible. Anthropic, which has an existing partnership with SpaceX, said it would increase compute support for Claude models inside Cursor ^[6], so for many teams the fallback is a settings change in a tool they already deployed rather than a new procurement. The reporting is silent on which OpenAI models keep working until the shutoff and in what volume. OpenAI only said it wants to preserve as much developer access as it can in the meantime, and called the decision "incredibly tough" ^[8]. Verifying that is now buyer-side work.

A forcing function you can run in an afternoon. For each workflow that touches Cursor, answer two questions. First, does this workflow actually require an OpenAI model, measured by running your own eval set with a substitute rather than by asking who prefers what. Second, is switching a config change or a rewrite, because custom agent rules, tool-calling behavior and prompt scaffolding tuned to one model family do not transfer for free. No dependency plus config change means you are done. No dependency plus rewrite means do it now, while nobody is forcing you. Real dependency plus config change means keep a working Claude profile and re-test it on a schedule. Real dependency plus rewrite is a budgeted project, and it has a deadline attached that you did not set.

The trap in the reporting-up phase is measuring the wrong thing. How many engineers clicked a different model in the picker tells you nothing about whether the substitute works. Time to a useful first diff, the share of suggestions accepted without rework, and how often people abandon the tool mid-task on your own repositories will tell you, and those numbers are gettable well before the notice runs out.
