xAI is folding SuperGrok, X Premium and Cursor into one subscription priced from about $8 to $200 a month, two outlets report. Cryptopolitan describes a Monday announcement; Crypto Briefing says the prices are leaks X had not confirmed by Oct. 11-12.

What happened

  • A Cursor staff member named Colin said in a Monday forum post that each paid tier gives at least twice the Grok-model coding usage of its equivalent under Cursor's old pricing.
  • Cursor subscribers quickly asked whether they must cancel existing plans and how $20 monthly accounts would move over, and the old Cursor Ultra plan has closed to new subscribers.
  • Crypto Briefing's leaked screens give the same four prices but label the $8 rung Premium and the $30 rung Plus, the reverse of Cryptopolitan's names.

Why it matters

  • cost A casual X Premium user faces a step of about $22 a month to reach the $30 rung, a jump Crypto Briefing calls meaningful for casual users. Heavy users pay the least per unit.
  • decision A Cursor subscriber on a $20 account has to decide whether Plus at $8, $12 lower, carries enough Cursor usage. The sources do not state Plus's Cursor allowance.
  • contradiction Every per-unit price here uses allowance multiples from Cryptopolitan alone. Crypto Briefing says which features land in which tier is unconfirmed, so the $4 Ultra unit is one outlet's number.

The ladder is a discount, or rather a volume discount, and a steep one. Take Plus's allowance as one unit and use Cryptopolitan's multiples [3]: Plus is $8 for one unit, Premium $30 for four, or $7.50 each [4], Super $100 for fifteen, or $6.67 [5], and Ultra $200 for fifty, or $4 [6]. Ultra's unit costs half of Plus's [8], and a subscriber who climbs from Plus to Ultra pays 25 times the price for 50 times the allowance [7]. (Whether anyone uses fifty units is another matter; the pool refreshes weekly [17].)

The Cursor side is narrower than the headline price suggests. The doubling Colin described is counted in Grok-model coding usage [9], so a subscriber's gain depends on how much of their Cursor work runs on Grok models. Team and enterprise accounts keep their per-seat price and get triple the coding allowance [19]. At an unchanged seat price, that cuts the cost of each unit of coding usage to one third [25].

Whether any of this moves rivals is a separate question, and the evidence is thin. Cryptopolitan says the move seems aimed at putting pressure on rivals' standalone pricing [20]. That is an inference: neither source reports a rival changing a price. The same outlet called the market reaction muted, with SPCX near $163, above its $135 IPO price and about 28% below its roughly $226 peak [21][24].

We think the structure is built to pull heavy coders up the ladder: the cheapest unit costs half the entry price, and the doubled Grok-model coding allowance matters mostly to people who code. We could be wrong in three ways. Casual X Premium users may balk at the step up from the $8 rung and cancel instead of migrating. Coders who prefer other models may find the Grok-model allowance worth little. Or the leaked prices may change before launch, since Prades said on Sept. 12 only that a rollout was expected soon [12].

A rival cutting a standalone plan after launch would support the pressure claim. A drop in Cursor-only sign-ups would support the migration one.

What to watch

  • An official xAI or X statement fixing launch date, tier names, prices and per-tier contents, since Crypto Briefing and Cryptopolitan currently disagree on all four.
  • Guidance to Cursor's $20 account holders on how they migrate, and whether unused weekly credits carry over.
  • Any rival changing a standalone plan price after the bundle goes live.
