RV Investigator has returned to Brisbane from a 24-day voyage led by The University of Queensland, carrying seafloor maps and sediment cores from parts of the southern Great Barrier Reef that were dry land before the sea covered them [1][2][9]. The work was co-designed with the Darumbal Traditional Owners of Sea Country and the neighbouring Woppaburra people, and Land and Sea Country Rangers from both groups sailed as part of the science team [3][4].

The voyage carried a second workstream on ocean dynamics, including how the East Australian Current interacts with the reef [15]. CSIRO voyage manager Matt Kimber said the southern Great Barrier Reef remains poorly understood, and that the data will show how the current interacts with the seafloor there and how life on the reef is sustained [16][17]. The oceanographic data are also intended to feed CSIRO's eReefs model, used to interpret past and present ocean conditions and to project future change [18].
