MacRumors ties ADT's secretive technician hires to Apple's Oct. 13 home event

ADT has been hiring low-voltage technicians since about July and giving them iPhones, MacRumors reported, clues the site ties to Apple's Oct. 13 event. A deal would bring professional installation to Apple's wall-mounted home hub, though the case so far is circumstantial.

What happened

  • Managers told hires who asked that the job relates to home automation and in-home installation services.
  • One hire said ADT planned to explain the role in September and then pushed that to October, matching reported Apple hub delays tied to Siri.
  • People familiar with the matter told MacRumors that ADT's home security agreement with Google has expired or will expire next year without renewal.

Why it matters

  • exposure ADT customers on Google Nest hardware have already lost some features, and a Google deal that is not renewed leaves the future of those setups unsettled.
  • constraint Retailers or installers who plan stock or staffing around an Apple-ADT install channel before Tuesday are working from clues the reporting outlet says could be coincidence.
  • capability A paid install option would let Apple sell the wall-mounted hub to buyers who would not mount a device on their own wall.

Some of the people ADT hired this year as "Low Voltage Technicians" have spent recent months mostly shadowing other ADT technicians while they wait to learn what their own job is [2][3]. Some of them, and their managers, signed nondisclosure agreements for the role [4]. Their work phones are iPhones, while ADT's other technicians use Android devices, according to MacRumors, which collected the accounts [5].

MacRumors builds its Apple case on those details and on timing [15]. The listings began around July, about three months before Apple's "Welcome home" event in New York on Oct. 13 [14][1]. One hire said ADT meant to explain the role in September, then moved that to October [7]. MacRumors connects the slip to reports that Apple postponed its hub several times because the AI version of Siri was not ready. The revamped Siri launched last month [8]. Some hires say the explanation is now due later this month [6]. On the NDAs, MacRumors wrote that this level of secrecy "is very common for Apple" [13].

What ADT has demonstrably done is hire technicians and hand them iPhones under NDA [2][4][5]. The job description comes secondhand: managers told some hires who asked that it relates to home automation and in-home installation services [11]. MacRumors did not report any hire being told Apple's name. Its own guess is an option to have an ADT technician professionally install Apple's wall-mounted hub or related accessories from LG [20]. Apple is expected to show a lineup of third-party smart home accessories built with brands such as LG [12].

The hub is reported in two forms, a tabletop unit with a speaker base and a wall-mounted one [10]. In our view, an installer matters only for the second. Fixing a device to a wall is much closer to the work a low-voltage job title describes than setting a speaker on a counter.

The larger open question is what happens after the install. The hub's reported features include home security monitoring, alongside accessory management, photo galleries, calendar views, music and FaceTime calling [9]. MacRumors says it is unclear whether a partnership would extend to ADT's monitoring [19]. We think that split decides what Apple is entering. An install-only deal buys labor at the point of sale for one product, while monitoring would put an Apple device at the front of a security company's customer relationship.

ADT's current tech partner is Google, through a home security partnership reached in 2023, and ADT reportedly dropped some features on Google Nest devices earlier this year [17]. People familiar with the matter told MacRumors the Google agreement either expired this year or will expire next year and is not set to be renewed [18].

MacRumors hedges its own report, writing that "all of these clues could somehow prove to be one big coincidence" [16]. The evidence supports a narrower claim with fair confidence: ADT is building an iPhone-equipped installation role for home automation work, with a briefing slated for October [5][11][6]. The tie to Apple is MacRumors' inference from the phones and the timing [15].

For installers and retailers, Tuesday's announcement settles two things: whether Apple offers paid professional installation, and whether ADT holds a monitoring contract on the hub. Installation alone means Apple has hired a labor force for its wall-mounted model, and independent installers compete with ADT for that one job. Monitoring alone makes ADT a paid service sold through Apple's hub. Both together would rebuild with Apple the kind of partnership ADT and Google are reported to be letting lapse [18]. Neither means ADT's iPhone-carrying technicians were hired for something else [5].

What to watch

  • Whether Apple's Oct. 13 "Welcome home" event names ADT or offers paid professional installation for the wall-mounted hub.
  • Whether ADT briefs its Low Voltage Technician hires later in October, as some of them said it planned to.
  • Whether ADT or Google confirms that their 2023 partnership has ended or will not be renewed.
