Lambda Web Functions let a plain Express server serve 128 concurrent requests per environment

AWS Lambda now runs port-listening HTTP servers such as Express and Fastify, with up to 128 concurrent requests per environment. Billing moves to CPU time used, while memory is metered for the life of the environment.

What happened

  • Lambda now has three form factors, Event Functions, Web Functions and MicroVMs, all built on the same Firecracker isolation technology.
  • Event Functions keep the existing model: an event-driven handler that is single-concurrent and billed on wall-clock time.
  • One command, aws lambda-web deploy --name my-web-app --code ./my-app, created the function, a first revision and an endpoint, and the post's author had an HTTPS URL in under a minute.
  • AWS says I/O-heavy workloads such as server-side rendering, API backends and token-streaming inference endpoints can see lower compute costs.

Why it matters

  • constraint Lambda picks the bind address, so in our view a server that hardcodes its port needs one edit before it deploys.
  • cost The announcement describes the metering but does not state a price for CPU time or memory, so a team cannot yet compute break-even against Event Functions.
  • decision AWS's example sends asynchronous processing to Event Functions, the user-facing API and rendering layer to Web Functions, and interactive code execution to MicroVMs, so each service in an account now needs a form-factor choice.

The contract between your server and Lambda is one environment variable. Lambda sets AWS_LAMBDA_HTTP_ENDPOINT to the host and port the server must listen on [8]. The Express example splits that value on the colon and passes both halves to app.listen [9]. The post's author calls the variable the only difference from running the same file locally, where you set it yourself, for example to 127.0.0.1:3000 [9].

Concurrency is where the billing model diverges. Event Functions run one request per environment at a time [4], so 128 simultaneous requests need 128 environments [13]. A Web Function can serve the same 128 from a single environment [13]. Memory is metered for as long as an environment exists, and CPU is metered by time used [7]. Fewer environments therefore means fewer running memory meters. In our view, each environment then has to be sized for its whole concurrent set.

AWS's cost claim is limited to I/O-heavy work [14]. For it to transfer to another service, requests must spend most of their wall-clock time waiting on databases and APIs, because that waiting consumes little CPU [7]. Traffic must also be dense enough to fill environments. A CPU-bound handler pays for the CPU it uses.

The revision and endpoint split is the sound part of the design. A revision is an immutable snapshot of deployed code, and an endpoint routes traffic to one revision or splits it across several [11]. The author says these are the resources used to control how traffic moves to new code [11]. We think that is the right primitive for the job.

What to watch

  • Published per-unit prices for active CPU and memory, which would let teams compute break-even against Event Functions.
  • Whether runtimes beyond Node.js get the same port-listening model, since the announcement names only Node.js frameworks.
  • Customer reports on how CPU-heavy server-side rendering behaves at 128 concurrent requests in one environment.
