KOSPI regains about a fifth of its 5.46% drop before the US CPI print

KOSPI rose more than 1% on Oct. 14 after a 5.46% one-day fall, as easing rate-hike fears lifted tech shares. That recovers about a fifth of the points lost, and the US consumer price index report was still due later that day.

What happened

  • The 13th was the fifth straight session of losses: from Oct. 6 the KOSPI shed a cumulative 13.83%.
  • Samsung Electronics fell 7.39% and SK hynix 10.09% on the 13th, the two heaviest names in the index.
  • On the morning of the 14th, New York Fed President John Williams told Bloomberg he saw no need for further monetary tightening next year.
  • Yonhap had the index at 6,104.21 at 11:20 a.m., up 68.86 points from the previous close.

Why it matters

  • exposure Foreign investors sold a net 4.53 trillion won on the 13th and bought only 25.2 billion won shortly after the open on the 14th, about 0.56% of that selling, so little foreign money stood behind the early rebound.
  • cost Holders who sat through the 13th are still about 5.4% below their Samsung Electronics entry and about 8.7% below on SK hynix, combining the Seoul Economic Daily's losses with Yonhap's late-morning gains.
  • contradiction Yonhap puts the 5.46% fall on AI capital-spending doubts, but the Seoul Economic Daily adds a Chinese server DRAM launch plan and a US session where Nvidia rose 0.97% while Micron fell 3.62%, so capex alone does not explain the move.

Against the points lost, the rebound is small. A 5.46% fall to a close of 6,035.35, after an intraday low of 5,911.11 [6], implies a prior close of about 6,384 and a loss of roughly 348 points [19]. Yonhap's 11:20 a.m. gain is 19.8% of that [20]. The Seoul Economic Daily's 9:10 a.m. count, 115.35 points higher at 6,150.70, was 33.1% of it [21], so the index gave back about 46 points between the two snapshots [22]. Samsung Electronics shows the same fade, with an early gain of 3.23% in the Seoul Economic Daily's count [13] narrowed to 2.16% in Yonhap's late-morning one [5]. (The two outlets timed their reports differently, so this compares two reports and is not a tick-by-tick series.)

We think the Korean exposure is narrower than "AI capex" suggests. It is exposure to memory earnings, or rather to the expected path of memory earnings, with capex doubts and rate fears as the triggers, and the evidence is in how unevenly the US session treated AI names [15]. The counter-thesis is that one overnight session is a thin sample. It would take Nvidia and the Korean chip names falling together over the next few sessions, or another 5% move with no memory news attached, to make us drop the narrower view.

The rate leg is thinner. The only recorded cause of the relief is one official's interview, followed by a fall in long-term US yields [12]. The September consumer price index was still due later on the 14th [4], and analysts cited by the Seoul Economic Daily name it and the chipmakers' third-quarter results as the variables that will set direction [16]. Both reports were filed before the print, so neither can say what it did. A hot number with the index still holding its gain would weaken the rate half of the thesis.

The valuation is the puzzle. "Current valuations for chipmakers, at price-earnings ratios of three to four times, reflect expectations that the industry will enter a downcycle within two years and that earnings will fall by more than 50% to 60%," said Huh Jae-hwan, an analyst at Eugene Investment & Securities [17]. Take his numbers as given: a share at three to four times earnings whose earnings fall 50% to 60% sits at six to ten times the lower figure if the price does not move [25]. The 13.83% five-session slide [9] is then the market paying less for the chance that the downcycle arrives, and a third-quarter report in which earnings hold would count against him. "For a genuine recovery, the view on memory has to change," Huh said [18].

What to watch

  • The KOSPI's reaction to the September US CPI print, measured against the 6,035.35 close and the 5,911.11 intraday low.
  • Third-quarter results from the major chipmakers: whether earnings fall toward the 50% to 60% decline that Huh Jae-hwan says current prices imply.
  • Whether Nvidia and Micron move together with SK hynix's US-listed receipts again, which would favor the AI-capex explanation over a memory-specific one.
