One Binance hour of ETH liquidations vs ETH's scale Darkfost's count of Binance ETH longs closed in one hour after the CPI release, beside ETH's 24-hour trading volume and market cap per CoinGecko.

Key figures: more than $106 million of ETH long positions were liquidated on Binance within one hour after the September CPI release, per Darkfost. ETH trading volume over the previous 24 hours was about $18.37 billion, and ETH market capitalization was near $286.9 billion, per CoinGecko.

What happened

  • Monthly CPI rose 0.6% in September against 0.4% in August, and annual inflation reached 3.7% from 3.4%, according to the BLS.
  • Darkfost estimated that the market's odds of another Fed rate increase had climbed from roughly 17% to nearly 30% over the preceding week.
  • Some market reports had ether briefly near $2,315, its lowest reported level since the August recovery.

Why it matters

  • exposure Leveraged ETH longs can be closed at the exchange's timing, not the trader's, and Darkfost counts derivatives volume at about nine times spot, so a small data surprise reaches them first.
  • contradiction Gasoline drove most of the monthly gain and core inflation is 2.6%, yet hike odds moved about 13 points, so the market repriced policy from a print that was largely energy.
  • constraint With RSI near 34, ether sits about 2.1% above the $2,300 level traders are watching, leaving little cushion for a second shock of similar size.

The liquidation is small beside the price move it came with. CoinGecko put ether's 24-hour fall at 5.99% against a market cap of $286.9 billion [7], which implies about $18.3 billion of market value gone [20], or roughly 173 times the $106 million of Binance longs that were closed [21]. The $106 million is 0.037% of that market cap [14] and about 0.58% of the $18.37 billion in 24-hour volume the source lists beside it [15]. Darkfost's figure is also narrow by construction: it is the value of closed positions, not the cash traders lost, and it covers Binance ETH longs for one hour, not liquidations across exchanges [10].

We think the liquidations show where the leverage sat, and that the market's structure set the size of the fall. Darkfost put Ether derivatives volume at about nine times spot volume in the period he examined and said the gap raised the market's sensitivity to sudden moves, particularly when leveraged traders react to economic announcements [8]. That is one analyst, one window and a volume ratio. The counter-thesis is that spot sellers drove most of the decline, and the source does not separate the two. The claim that this was the largest hourly long liquidation on Ethereum in six months also rests on Darkfost alone [23].

The trigger was thinner than the reaction. Monthly CPI beat the roughly 0.5% consensus Darkfost cited by 0.1 point [3][17]. More than half of the 0.6% came from gasoline, up 9.1% in the month [5], so energy supplied over 0.3 points [18]. Core inflation rose to 2.6% from 2.4% [4]. Yet Darkfost estimated that the market-implied chance of another Fed rate increase went from roughly 17% to nearly 30% over the preceding week [9], a gain of about 13 points [16]. Some of that predates this print, so the CPI does not own all 13.

The fairer objection to calling the print soft is that it was not only gasoline: shelter rose 0.4% and airline fares 1.2% [13]. A Fed that watches those lines could reasonably have moved its odds. Even so, a 13-point repricing landed on a market where, by Darkfost's count, derivatives trade nine times the spot volume, and the traders who borrowed to hold ether were the ones forced to sell into it [12].

The view is wrong if ether returns to the $2,500 Darkfost gave as the pre-release price [6] while hike odds stay near 30%. That would make the fall a positioning flush and the rates story an excuse. The view holds if the price stays under $2,500 as odds keep rising.

What to watch

  • Final October 14 spot Ether ETF flow figures, since the source called the outflows provisional and several fund readings were unavailable.
  • The Fed decision investors are awaiting, and whether hike odds hold near 30% or fall back toward 17%.
  • Whether the next hourly Binance ETH long liquidation exceeds $106 million, which would test Darkfost's six-month label.
