HD Hyundai's 1.4 trillion won energy outlay equals a fifth of its first-half operating profit

HD Hyundai reported first-half operating profit of 6.96 trillion won, up 187%, on revenue of 42.01 trillion won. Its 1.4 trillion won spent or set aside for data-center engines, servicing and a reactor facility is about a fifth of that.

Ulsan expansion is the largest energy outlay Sums HD Hyundai units have planned, paid or decided to invest in new energy businesses, in billion won

Three figures: HD Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to invest 833.6 billion won by 2028 to expand production facilities in Ulsan; HD Hyundai Marine Solution acquired U.S.-based Goltens for 331.5 billion won; the group decided to invest 238.6 billion won in a small modular reactor facility.

What happened

  • Both figures are the highest since the 2018 launch of Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings, now HD Hyundai, and revenue rose 22.5% on the year.
  • Cumulative orders for the HiMSEN engine, developed from marine engine technology, have topped 1.5 trillion won so far this year as AI data-center power demand surged.
  • The group aims to reach 7.2 gigawatts of engine capacity by 2030, with marine engines staying in Ulsan and land-based power engines moving to a new plant and Yeongam.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint Capacity spending runs to 2028 and the 7.2 gigawatt target is dated 2030, so the 3.74 trillion won revenue forecast belongs to the end of the decade and cannot explain this year's profit.
  • Who has to decide decision Investors have to decide whether the first-half margin repeats before they capitalise it, because the engine business is not yet in the numbers to settle the question.
  • Who's exposed exposure A second half of partial strikes and slow naval orders tests the earnings step-up directly, since the engine expansion is still being built.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction The report says business interest lies in the group's shift more than in the numbers, yet the numbers hold the open question: a margin that more than doubled with no stated cause.

Start with what the 1.4 trillion won is made of. The en.sedaily.com report lists 833.6 billion won for engine capacity in Ulsan by 2028 [5], 331.5 billion won for the Goltens acquisition [10] and 238.6 billion won for a small modular reactor facility [6]. Those three come to 1,403.7 billion won [12], and the report gives 1.4 trillion won as the total for new energy infrastructure [7]. Only the Goltens deal is described as done; the engine plant is a plan and the reactor facility a decision. Against 6.96 trillion won of first-half operating profit [1], the total is 20.1% [13], so one half-year of profit would cover it almost five times [14].

The more interesting figure is the margin. Backing the growth rates out of the reported figures gives about 34.3 trillion won of revenue and 2.43 trillion won of operating profit a year earlier [17], a margin of 7.1% then and 16.6% now [18]. The extra 4.5 trillion won of profit came on 7.7 trillion won of extra revenue, an incremental margin near 59% [19]. We'd expect most of that to be ships, but the report does not break profit down by business.

The engine case rests on one analyst. Lee Jae-hyuk of LS Securities forecast that the HiMSEN capacity expansion would contribute $2.8 billion, about 3.74 trillion won, in annual revenue [22]. That is 4.5 times the 833.6 billion won of capacity spending [23] and about 4.5% of group revenue if the first half is simply doubled [24]. It is revenue, though. The margin on it (or rather, the margin after the cost of the new plant) will decide whether the engines are worth more than their share of sales. HD Hyundai Marine Solution adds its own target of up to 2 trillion won of maintenance and repair revenue by 2030 [9].

We think the engines are best priced as an option attached to a shipbuilder. The 1.4 trillion won leaves 79.9% of the half's operating profit outside the new businesses [16] (operating profit is not cash, but it is the figure available), and the analyst's 3.74 trillion won is under 5% of revenue [24]. That view is wrong if engine margins turn out well above the group's 16.6%, since the same sales would then be worth more. It is wrong in the other direction if the margin jump proves a one-off: the 6.96 trillion won would then overstate what the yards earn, and the cover for new spending shrinks. A third path: orders outrun the 7.2 gigawatt plan [20], and spending and revenue rise together.

The nearer risk is in ships. The naval and special-purpose orders still to win at HD Hyundai Heavy are $2.66 billion, 7.3 times what the first half brought in [15]. The report lists partial strikes, the rejection of a tentative wage and collective bargaining agreement, and on-site safety management after a serious industrial accident as immediate challenges [11].

What to watch

  • Any separate disclosure of HiMSEN revenue and margin: a margin above the group's 16.6% would raise the value of the 3.74 trillion won forecast.
  • Second-half naval and special-purpose orders at HD Hyundai Heavy against the $2.66 billion still needed for the annual target.
  • Whether the rejected tentative wage agreement is replaced without further partial strikes.
