CoreWeave's 2032 bonds yield 14.8% on a 9.625% coupon, twice Oracle's yield on its 2032 paper

CoreWeave shares fell 14% to 16% on October 14 as the yield on its 2032 bonds neared 15%. An investor's chart has the bonds leading by a day, yet rate-hike bets after hot consumer price data hit the whole group together.

Refinancing at 14.8% would lift yearly interest Desk what-if: yearly interest on $1.25 billion of 2032 bonds if refinanced at a 14.8% yield, against a 9.625% coupon.

Three figures. Desk estimate: if $1.25 billion were refinanced at a 14.8% yield, yearly interest would be about $185.0 million. At a 9.625% coupon it is about $120.3 million, assuming the issue is the 9.625% note. CoreWeave's unsecured bonds due 2032 total $1.25 billion.

What happened

  • Put buying on CoreWeave shares surged, and Crypto Briefing reported options flow with unusual patterns tied to downside protection.
  • Nebius and IREN, the other neoclouds, fell between 9% and 15% in the same session.
  • Late Tuesday, investor Chamath Palihapitiya posted that the 2032 yield had touched 15% and closed at a new high; Elon Musk replied "yikes."
  • The cost of insuring debt against default for some AI companies, including Oracle and CoreWeave, surged to record highs, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Why it matters

  • cost If the $1.25 billion 2032 issue is the 9.625% note, refinancing it at 14.8% would cost about $185 million a year against $120 million at the coupon, an extra $64.7 million.
  • constraint We'd expect new borrowing to price near the bond yield, so a data center or chip order that cannot earn roughly 15% on its debt-funded share gets harder to approve.
  • exposure Gartner ties the survival of up to 80% of neoclouds as independents to revenue catching up with planned capex, and a 14.8% funding cost shortens the time for that to happen.
  • contradiction Crypto Briefing reads the day as credit leading equity, while Channel NewsAsia's account starts with rate-hike bets, and one rate shock could have moved both.

The debt-first order rests on one dated print. Crypto Briefing wrote that "Credit markets moved, then stocks followed, then hedging demand spiked" [19], and the only timestamped support is Chamath Palihapitiya's Tuesday chart of the 2032 bond [4]. The stock fell 16% on Wednesday, or rather 14% to 16% depending on the print [16][21]. Channel NewsAsia has CoreWeave set to lose about a quarter of its value this month [7]. If that figure includes Wednesday's drop, the stock had lost only about 11% to 13% before the session opened [23]. We think the bonds gave the earlier warning by about a day, and the reports do not show a longer lead.

The credit repricing is easier to size against the coupon. CoreWeave's 9.625% note due 2032 yields 14.8% [2], which is 5.175 points over its coupon [14], and its 9.75% note due 2031 yields about 14.9% [3]. Oracle's 6.25% bond due November 2032 yields 7.24% [18], so the market asks about 2.04 times Oracle's yield for CoreWeave paper of the same maturity year [15]. Oracle's shares fell nearly 7% on the day [18].

Luis Alvarado, co-head of global fixed income strategy at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, said: "The era of easy money, which we experienced in the first nine months of the year, is starting to disappear and dissipate." [9]

The counter-thesis is that rates did both jobs. The prospect of a second Fed hike as soon as this month rose after hot consumer price data, with the two-year Treasury yield up 7.2 basis points and the ten-year up 3.6 [6], and higher rates raise the cost of borrowing to build data centers and buy chips [10]. A few basis points in Treasuries do not produce a 14.8% yield on their own. They do reach every leveraged name at once, and the group fell together [17].

The reports also disagree on figures. Crypto Briefing has the 2032 bonds closing near 14.5% after a 15% high [1], and CNBC has them at 14.8% [2]; neither says when it measured. Channel NewsAsia lists Nebius down 15.1% and CoreWeave down 9.5% [20], the reverse of CNBC's 16% for CoreWeave and 9% for Nebius [21]. We use CNBC's.

We would call the credit-first thesis wrong if the 2032 yield falls well back from 14.8% on a quiet day for Treasuries while the shares keep sliding, or if the next leg down shows up in the stock first and the bonds follow.

What to watch

  • Where the 2032 yield settles against Tuesday's reported 15% high once the Fed's next decision shows whether a second hike arrives this month.
  • Whether default-insurance prices on CoreWeave and Oracle ease from record highs or keep rising.
  • Any CoreWeave or Nebius update that sets revenue growth against capex plans, the condition in Gartner's 80% warning.
