CoreWeave's 16% bond yield puts a price on its $50 billion of debt

CoreWeave's 2031 bond yield passed 16% and the cost to insure its debt topped 1,000 basis points, a record. The strain sits on one loss-making borrower, and the sources do not show it spreading across AI infrastructure.

CoreWeave debt costs more to insure and service The cost of insuring CoreWeave's debt against default this week, per S&P Global Market Intelligence data, and its second-quarter net interest expense.

Three figures. Insuring CoreWeave's debt against default cost above 1,000 basis points this week, a record. At that level, insuring $10 million of debt costs about $1 million a year. Second-quarter net interest expense was $640 million, against $267 million a year earlier.

What happened

  • CoreWeave stock fell 16% on Wednesday as its bond yields jumped, with the 2032 bond at 14.8% and the 2031 bond at about 14.9%.
  • The October 2031 bond is set for a fifth straight weekly loss, down about 3 cents on the dollar this week.
  • The shares are down more than 15% on the week and on course to lose about a fifth of their value in the month, after a 5.9% jump Thursday and a 4.1% premarket dip Friday.

Why it matters

  • What it costs cost At 1,000 basis points, insuring $10 million of CoreWeave debt costs about $1 million a year, a price any lender must pay to hold the bonds hedged.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says CoreWeave's cost of capital is falling and sees no need to backstop it, yet the 2031 yield rose about 1.1 points in a day. The sources do not say what period he meant.
  • What it limits constraint With results not due until November, the bond market is pricing CoreWeave off the second-quarter interest figure, and the company has no scheduled earnings to answer it sooner.

A 16% yield can mean a rate shock landing on the most indebted name, a credit problem particular to CoreWeave, or the first price in a sector-wide repricing, and we think the sources support the first two far better than the third. AI infrastructure stocks did fall over the week as a hot inflation reading stoked worries about borrowing costs [10]. But BCA Research analysts said, as CNA reported, "A hot inflation print triggered a sharp selloff in CoreWeave because its business model is a highly indebted play on future data center demand" [6]. They also said "Although the rest of the tech complex is also sensitive to the pace and magnitude of AI adoption and use, it is, on average, considerably less sensitive to interest rates" [7]. Nebius Group, the one listed peer in the sources, was down 1.5% on Friday morning and headed for its steepest weekly fall in two months [8].

Second-quarter net interest expense was $640 million [2], so it annualizes to $2.56 billion [13]. Apply a 16% yield to roughly $50 billion of debt [3] and the figure is $8 billion a year [14]. That is an illustration, since it assumes every dollar of debt costs what one bond briefly yielded on Thursday [9].

Some buyers are leaning the other way. Cathie Wood, founder and CEO of ARK Investment Management, said in an interview in Seoul on Friday that it is typical for young companies raising capital while rates are elevated to pay steep borrowing costs, according to Quartz [16]. ARK bought an estimated $25.8 million of the stock on Wednesday and Thursday [17], about 0.05% of the debt load [22].

We would be wrong if the stress travels. A cooler inflation print that pulls the 2031 bond back would make this a story about rates and one company, or rather, about one company's sensitivity to rates. A rerating of other AI borrowers' bonds would make the broader reading right. The sources report share moves for Nebius and no bond yields or default-insurance prices for any other issuer.

What to watch

  • Yields and default-insurance prices on other AI infrastructure borrowers, since the sources report only a share move for Nebius.
  • Whether the 2031 bond holds above 16% or retraces if the next inflation reading is cooler.
  • CoreWeave's November results, for net interest expense against the $640 million of the second quarter.
