Claude Dashboards links every number to the SQL that produced it

Anthropic's Claude Dashboards, now in beta on paid plans, shows the SQL query behind any number a user clicks. The New Stack reported that Anthropic has not yet said whose credentials run each refresh, a detail data teams need before connecting a production warehouse.

What happened

  • Dashboards connects to Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon Redshift and ClickHouse, and it also works with Claude's existing connectors, including Salesforce.
  • Anthropic says Claude refreshes a dashboard as the underlying data changes, with a timestamp on each chart showing when it last updated.
  • Users can move a dashboard into Grafana, Hex, Mixpanel, monday.com, Omni, PostHog or Sigma, with Looker, Perplexity and Tableau support coming later.
  • OpenAI's Data agent, a ChatGPT Work plugin launched about a month earlier, builds similar dashboards and can write them directly into Power BI, Tableau and ThoughtSpot.

Why it matters

  • capability Data teams can check a generated dashboard by rerunning the query behind any figure in their own warehouse console before anyone acts on it.
  • constraint Until the semantic-layer question is settled, a reviewer cannot assume a Claude metric matches the definition the finance team already uses.
  • decision Admins deciding whether to allow external sharing have to make that call before knowing which identity serves warehouse data to public-link viewers.

Putting the query one click from each figure [2][3] is good engineering. I think most of the risk in a generated dashboard sits in its SQL, and this design keeps that SQL in front of whoever reads the chart. Readers who would rather skip it can ask Claude to explain the figure [4]. The explanation comes from the same model that wrote the query.

Two answers decide how far that review reaches. The New Stack reported both as open. One is whether Claude goes through a semantic layer or queries the tables directly. The other is which account's credentials a dashboard runs under when it refreshes [14]. Admins can switch on sharing beyond the organisation, public links included [15]. Anthropic has not said whether those viewers see live data or whose credentials retrieve it, according to the same report [15].

The semantic-layer answer sets the size of the review. With a governed layer, a generated query points at a metric the business has already defined. Against raw tables, Claude picks the joins and decides what counts as revenue, so the reviewer approves the definition along with the result. The New Stack reported that OpenAI's agent supports semantic layers such as Databricks Genie Ontology [12].

The credentials answer sets who sees what. Each automatic refresh [7] runs with no user in the session, so it has to authenticate as someone: the author, a service account, or each viewer. If it runs as the author, row-level restrictions follow the author, and a viewer on a public link gets the author's view of the data. OpenAI says Data agent queries respect the existing table, row and column permissions of whatever account is connected [13].

The New Stack judged the two products' overall direction essentially the same [10]. In the published material, OpenAI has said more about permissions, and Anthropic has said more about tracing a figure back to its query [13][2]. I'd expect teams to draft in Claude and move dashboards whose queries pass review into the BI tool they already govern. The New Stack reported that Anthropic is not positioning Dashboards as a BI replacement [8].

The warehouse vendors sell their own versions, Snowflake Intelligence and Databricks Genie [17]. Snowflake signed a $200 million deal with Anthropic in December 2025, and product leaders at both Snowflake and Databricks commented in OpenAI's Data agent announcement [16].

Off by default is the right setting for a tool that writes queries against a production warehouse. Anthropic chose it. Dashboards is a beta on paid plans, and Enterprise admins must enable it, along with Motion [5], a new tool that animates reports and charts by writing code [9]. Docs, Slides and Design, by contrast, will be enabled by default for Enterprise organisations on Oct. 15 [6].

What to watch

  • Anthropic documenting whose credentials a Claude dashboard refresh uses, and what outside viewers on a public link can see.
  • Whether Claude Dashboards adds semantic-layer support comparable to OpenAI's Databricks Genie Ontology integration.
  • Arrival of the Looker, Perplexity and Tableau exports that Anthropic lists as coming later.
