BMW's 468-mile i3 undercuts the matching gas 3 Series by $4,400

BMW priced the 468-mile electric i3 50 xDrive at $61,500, $4,400 under the similarly powerful gas M350 xDrive. The cheapest 3 Series is still a $49,900 gas car, so the saving only reaches buyers who were already shopping in the mid-$60,000s.

What happened

  • Destination adds $1,350, bringing the i3 50 xDrive to $62,850 when it reaches US buyers in the first quarter of 2027.
  • Two motors, a 322-horsepower rear unit that uses electromagnets instead of permanent magnets and a 165-horsepower front unit, combine for 463 hp and 476 lb-ft.
  • The i3 sits on BMW's newest platform, while the gas 3 Series it is compared with uses an overhauled version of an existing one.
  • Its Gen6 battery uses 46mm-by-95mm cylindrical cells that BMW says are 20% more energy dense than the prismatic cells in Gen5 packs.

Why it matters

  • decision Fleet and household buyers have to name the gas trim they are replacing before the EV price claim means anything, because the i3 only comes out cheaper when set against the M350.
  • constraint Until BMW adds a cheaper i3, anyone budgeting near $50,000 for a 3 Series has no electric choice at that price.
  • constraint BMW has not disclosed the i3's battery capacity, so buyers cannot yet work out its efficiency or a per-mile charging cost from the spec sheet.

Picture someone at a BMW dealer with about $50,000 set aside for a 3 Series. TechCrunch lists the gas 330 at $49,900 and the 330 xDrive at $51,900 [5]. Against those, the i3 50 xDrive costs $11,600 more than the base car and $9,600 more than the all-wheel-drive one [1][2]. According to TechCrunch, the 330 has no electric equivalent yet [6].

The saving sits one rung higher. TechCrunch pairs the i3 50 xDrive with the gas M350 xDrive at $65,900, a car it calls similarly powerful and aimed at similar pocketbooks, and puts the EV's discount at 6.7% [3]. Neither price includes destination [4].

The pitch, in TechCrunch's words, is that EVs are "gaining the upper hand on purchase price" [17]. BloombergNEF had expected EVs to undercut their gas equivalents in 2026, the outlet notes [18]. What BMW has done is narrower. Its cheapest Neue Klasse i3 lands within $4,400 of the M350, and the other i3 it has announced, the M60 xDrive, is a higher-powered variant [20][3][21].

Range is the second half of the parity case, and it rests on two estimates. BMW says the i3's EPA-based estimate is 468 miles, according to The Verge, which had guessed about 440 in March [11][12]. TechCrunch assumes the new gas car matches previous models at about 450 miles a tank with all-wheel drive [13]. That leaves an 18-mile edge for the EV, measured between a manufacturer's figure and a reporter's assumption [3].

Refueling is where the two cars behave differently. BMW says fast charging adds 208 miles in 10 minutes, about 44% of the rated range per stop [15][4]. Plug & Charge offers automatic charging at 10 providers, according to The Verge [19]. TechCrunch wrote: "The difference might be noticeable to extreme road warriors, but for most drivers, it'll be academic" [16].

The Verge puts the i3 firmly in the Mercedes C-Class segment on price [7]. Inside BMW's own range, it is a car for someone already prepared to spend in the mid-$60,000s on a 3 Series with M350-level power. For that buyer the i3 costs less and, on BMW's number, goes slightly farther [3][3].

The decision splits on two inputs: the gas trim you would otherwise buy, and how often you drive more than about 450 miles in a day. An M350 buyer who rarely does that gets a car $4,400 cheaper and will seldom meet the charging stop [3]. An M350 buyer who does it every week is swapping a fuel stop for a 10-minute charge worth 208 miles, and that stop is the thing to time on their own routes [15]. For a 330 buyer, range is the second question. The first is whether 463 horsepower and a redesigned dashboard with a windshield display are worth $9,600 to $11,600 [9][22][1][2].

What to watch

  • The price of the higher-powered i3 M60 xDrive, which will show how far above $61,500 BMW stretches the electric line.
  • A published range figure for the 2027 gas M350 xDrive, which would replace TechCrunch's 450-mile assumption in the parity comparison.
  • Any i3 trim priced near the $49,900 330 or $51,900 330 xDrive.
