Bitcoin slips into a Glassnode liquidation band after a $484.9 million ETF exit

US spot Bitcoin ETFs shed a net $484.9 million on Oct. 7, their largest one-day outflow since June, Farside Investors data show. At about $82,700, Bitcoin now trades inside the band where Glassnode maps its nearest liquidation cluster, so the next move depends on how leverage is stacked there.

What happened

  • BlackRock's IBIT led the redemptions with $207.7 million, roughly 43% of the day's total, according to Farside Investors data.
  • The exit wiped out $321.6 million of inflows from October's first four sessions, leaving the funds about $163 million in net outflows for the month.
  • Bitcoin closed Oct. 7 at $83,282 on CoinGecko data, down from $85,771 on Oct. 5, after failing to hold above $85,000 earlier in the week.
  • Glassnode said combined spot-exchange and US ETF volume averaged about $6.8 billion a day over seven days, lower than on nine of every ten trading days since January 2024.

Why it matters

  • decision A bounce trade needs a settled close above $85,500, about $2,826 above price and nearly three times the drop that reaches the band's floor, so the bearish trigger is much closer than the bullish one.
  • exposure Wednesday's net redemptions equal about 7% of an average day's combined spot and ETF turnover in Glassnode's seven-day figure, so another day like it would land on unusually light books.
  • constraint Ether funds have lost about $569 million since Sept. 29 over seven straight outflow sessions, so one strong IBIT day would not show crypto fund demand returning.

One day of ETF flows is a noisy figure. IBIT alone swung by $329.7 million between Oct. 6 and Oct. 7, from a $122 million inflow to an outflow [4][19]. Daily flows across the funds changed sign three times in October's first five sessions [21]. Wednesday's selling was also spread across issuers. Fidelity's FBTC lost $105.1 million and ARK 21Shares' ARKB $101.7 million [2], together $206.8 million, within $0.9 million of IBIT's figure [20]. Bitwise's BITB and Grayscale's GBTC added $27.6 million and $39.3 million of redemptions [3].

The positioning picture comes from Glassnode, which places the nearest major liquidation cluster between $81,700 and $83,300, according to crypto.news [14]. The crypto.news account of the report does not give the cluster's dollar size or say which side of the market holds the leverage. At CoinGecko's latest reading of $82,674 [8], Bitcoin is inside the band, $974 from its floor, or about 1.2% [22]. The latest daily range ran from $82,317 to $84,340 [8]. That $2,023 spread is roughly twice the distance to the floor [23]. Below the band, Glassnode sees a large block of Binance spot bids at $81,000 to $81,250 [15]. Those buyers have chosen to wait below the price instead of paying $82,674.

A sweep is one outcome: price trades through $81,700, positions in the cluster are closed out, and the Binance bids absorb the selling inside a session [14][15]. A break is another. Ted Pillows, who described a range of roughly $82,500 to $87,500, put a downside level near $77,500 that depends on a confirmed move below that range [18]. Daan Crypto Trades said $83,000 is the level bulls need to recover, and that continued weakness could bring $75,000 and $72,000 into focus [17]. Both sets are analyst targets with conditions attached. The third outcome is a recovery, in which flows turn the way they did on Oct. 6 [5] and Bitcoin settles above $85,500, the close Glassnode says would win back the level lost this week [16]. Glassnode puts a large sell block just above that, at $86,500 to $86,750 [16].

On this evidence I'd expect the floor to be tested, since it sits inside one ordinary day's move [23]. I lean toward the sweep, because the bids beneath it are large enough for Glassnode to single out [15]. The counter-case comes from Bitfinex. Its analysts said earlier in the week that ETF inflows had fallen roughly 90% from the preceding week, and that fresh spot demand was needed for another attempt toward $90,000, according to crypto.news [12]. If that slowdown is the trend, Wednesday's exit continues it, and the $81,000 bids would face the next outflow as well [15]. The view is wrong if Bitcoin closes below $81,000 on another day of ETF redemptions, or if it reclaims $85,500 without trading down to $81,700 first [14][16].

What to watch

  • Farside's next daily Bitcoin ETF prints: a second outflow near $484.9 million would support Bitfinex's demand-slowdown reading over the one-day-noise case.
  • Whether the Binance spot bids at $81,000 to $81,250 hold if Bitcoin trades through $81,700.
  • A settled daily close above $85,500, Glassnode's line for recovering the level lost this week.
