Bessent leads the AI czar shortlist on a brief of bank warnings and China talks
Semafor's three sources put the Treasury secretary at the front of a four-name field for a post whose structure and authority Trump has not described. The White House calls unannounced personnel reporting baseless speculation.

- Semafor reported on Sept. 22, citing three people familiar with the matter, that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is emerging as a frontrunner for Trump's new AI czar position.

Bessent's AI portfolio started with banks. Semafor reported that he became a more active participant in AI policymaking earlier this year after financial institutions told him advanced AI systems could make their systems vulnerable [13]. The second step was foreign policy. In New York on Sunday he led talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng that focused heavily on AI, ahead of this week's meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington [10].
"When President Trump talked about appointing an AI czar, I think it is to put context, shape and contours around these questions, and they're very important," Bessent told CNBC earlier this week [14]. He added that he thought humans are ultimately responsible for what AI does [15].
Three people familiar with the matter told Semafor he is the frontrunner [1]; one source told Reuters on Tuesday he could take the role [9]; a second told Reuters no decision had been made [8]. That is five unnamed sources against a single on-record sentence [29]. "Any reporting about personnel decisions that have not been officially announced by the administration should be regarded as baseless speculation," White House spokesman Kush Desai said [5]. The Treasury Department did not return Semafor's request for comment [6].
The title would add to duties he already holds. Bessent is acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, and his Treasury is leading the effort to isolate Iran economically through sanctions [19]. Trump had already given him a lead role in the revamp of US trade policy, the critical minerals negotiation with Ukraine, and a temporary turn running the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau [18]. He has also repeatedly represented the administration on cryptocurrency regulation, including the push for congressional market structure legislation [25]. Semafor notes that the Cabinet job would not be a barrier, since Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has simultaneously held the energy czar moniker [17]. The AI work on the record is bank exposure and bilateral security diplomacy, and a czar title on Bessent would formalize the route the file has already taken. A Kratsios or dark-horse pick would undercut the case that the file followed Treasury, as would an AI Force with its own staff and a technical standards remit, or a US-China notification channel that advances after the summit without Treasury running it.
