Apple locks its new watch health features behind Series 12 hardware

Somebody in IT will open the spec table, see 1,196 sq mm where last year's said 1,220, and start working out what breaks in the app. Per MacRumors' reading of Apple's own specs, the 46mm Series 12 display area is 2% smaller than the Series 11's, and the 42mm drops 1.9%, from 989 sq mm to 970 ^[7]. Resolution is unchanged ^[8]. Divide 1,196 by 1,220 and you get 0.980; the square root is 0.990, so the linear shrink is about 1% ^[9]. Layouts in points stay where they are, and a 10mm touch target is now roughly 9.9mm. The case went the other way. The 46mm model is 40mm tall, up from 39mm, and the 42mm is 37mm, up from 36mm ^[6]. The publishers do not agree on the display side of this: 9to5Mac wrote that "The screen size remains the same, but the case being slightly larger results in bigger bezels" ^[10], and Gizmodo says Apple advertises the Series 12 as having the same usable screen area while measuring the 46mm case at 46 by 40 by 9.7mm, 1mm larger than the Series 11 ^[11]. Aluminium models also switch to Ceramic Shield 2, which Gizmodo says is 60% harder than the Ion-X glass on the aluminium Series 11 and still a step down from the sapphire on titanium and ceramic ^[27]. The feature list is where a mixed fleet comes apart. Readiness, Recovery HRV, the daytime Vitals view and the new heart rate and step complications are exclusive to the Series 12 ^[17], and Audio Intelligence needs a Series 12 or an Ultra 4 ^[18]. A Series 11 running the same watchOS build does not get them. That is a sharper break than last year, when the Series 11 added four changes over the Series 10 by MacRumors' count ^[3]. Apple said readiness "analyzes a user's recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score to offer insight into their capacity for the day ahead" ^[16], and the output is one score from 0 to 10 with four recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It ^[15]. Underneath it is a sampling change. Heart rate is now read every five seconds, which Apple puts at 60 times more often than before, with HRV up to 24 times more often ^[13]. The accuracy claim is Apple's own, that the Series 12 has the most accurate heart rate sensing of any wearable ^[14]. An operation that tops watches up between shifts will feel the charging figure before the runtime one: 15 minutes now yields up to 12 hours of use instead of eight ^[25], 50% more from the same top-up ^[26]. Outdoor workouts go from eight hours to 10, which Apple calls a 25% gain ^[24]. Everyday battery is unchanged at up to 24 hours, or 38 in Low Power Mode ^[23]. Audio Intelligence is the piece a policy team will have to review. A double press of the Digital Crown shows the previous 15 seconds of conversation as a text snippet ^[20], and Sound Recognition listens for sirens and doorbells to alert users who are deaf or hard of hearing ^[33]. Apple says audio is processed in a hardware-isolated Secure Exclave on the S11 chip and is never recorded ^[21]. Some of these features ship at launch and others arrive in a software update in late 2026 ^[22]. The buy sorts on two axes: whether the outcome you want depends on a Series 12-only feature, and whether the fleet has to behave identically for everyone. Yes to both means buying Series 12 across the board and pulling a refresh cycle forward, because the $399 Series 11 is off the price list ^[1]. Yes only to the first means buying Series 12 for the people whose work the sensor data actually serves, and accepting a support desk that answers two different questions.
