Veterinary researchers have used PCR to confirm human herpes simplex virus type 1 in lemurs for the first time, in four privately owned animals in the United States that all had close contact with people and all died of encephalitis [1][2][3][4][1]. One of the four had been used in a "lemur yoga" program, which makes this less a curiosity about exotic pets than a documented failure mode for any business that puts customers in a room with primates [5].
The series, published in July in the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, covers two ring-tailed lemurs, one black-and-white ruffed lemur and one ruffed-lemur hybrid, across an eight-year span [2][3][6][3]. Three were exotic pets with close human contact [7]. For the yoga animal, study co-author Dr. Jim Wellehan of the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine told Live Science the infection was almost certainly related to close human contact during the sessions, while noting the study cannot prove transmission happened at any particular class [8][9]. His description of the setup is the operative detail: "People are doing yoga, and there's lemurs wandering around," he said in a statement. "It's not good for the lemurs" [10].
The asymmetry is the whole problem. In people, HSV-1 usually causes nothing at all or cold sores, most adults carry it, and it can be shed without symptoms [11][12][13]. It spreads through saliva or contact with skin around the mouth [14]. In the lemurs, the same virus produced lethargy, inappetence, mouth and throat ulcers and breathing trouble; one ring-tailed lemur had prolonged repeated seizures and died two days after veterinarians first saw it [15][16]. Post-mortem brain tissue showed inflammation, tissue destruction and intranuclear inclusions consistent with herpesvirus infection, and the team detected HSV-1 genetic material and proteins in brain cells [17][18].
Wellehan frames the human side as an evolved delivery mechanism: "We've evolved these kissing behaviors that have resulted in pretty effective transmissions" of HSV-1, he told Live Science, which is why human infection rates are so high [19]. He also notes that herpesviruses have "amazing host fidelity" and rarely make big host jumps [20], and cross-species cases like these remain uncommon [21]. Rarity is not reassurance for an operator, though, because the observed outcome in this small series was uniformly fatal [1], and HSV-1 has previously killed captive and wild marmosets, saki monkeys, gibbons and other monkeys [22].
The one practically useful finding is diagnostic. In two of the four animals, oral or mucosal swabs taken while they were alive tested positive; the other two were confirmed only after death [23][2]. That means the same swab-and-PCR workflow a clinic uses on a person could plausibly catch these infections in a living lemur, rather than at necropsy [24].
Worth watching: whether facilities running primate-contact sessions add antemortem swab screening for animals showing oral ulcers or lethargy, and whether the count of confirmed cases rises now that a molecular method has been validated in this host. Earlier lemur reports relied on non-molecular laboratory methods [25], so the historical record almost certainly undercounts. Also watch how private owners and encounter-program operators handle the plain implication of asymptomatic shedding [13]: the human does not need to feel sick to be infectious.
