XRP out-trades Bitcoin and Ethereum on Upbit at a price about 0.3% above Binance's
XRP drew $145.6 million in won trading on Upbit on Oct. 15, ahead of Bitcoin at $126.5 million and Ethereum at $92.1 million. Crypto Briefing and Bitcoin News tie the lead to South Korea's block on 27 offshore exchanges, but the evidence for a retail rush into one altcoin is thin.

What happened
- On Oct. 16 XRP still led with $108.3 million against Bitcoin's $95.3 million and Ethereum's $62.7 million, in a reading Bitcoin News took at 04:36 UTC.
- XRP closed at $1.42 on Oct. 11, touched an intraday low of $1.29 on Oct. 15 and was recovering to around $1.34, according to Bitcoin News.
- Crypto Briefing adds that turbulence in Korean stocks pushed retail investors, particularly those in their 40s and 50s, to rotate out of local shares and into crypto.
Why it matters
- What it limits constraint Neither source reports XRP's share of Upbit volume before the block, so the concentration claim has no earlier level to be tested against.
- Who's exposed exposure Upbit handled about 15% of global XRP spot volume in recent periods, according to Crypto Briefing, so a change in Korean rules or Korean appetite reaches the token's liquidity worldwide.
- Who has to decide decision Anyone using Upbit volume as a signal has to choose between accumulation and exit, and Bitcoin News says the order books do not settle it, so the call rests on price and premium data.
XRP's $145.57 million on Oct. 15 was 11.74% of Upbit's volume [1][2], so Upbit's 24-hour total in that reading was near $1.24 billion [12]. Bitcoin's 10.20% and Ethereum's 7.43% [2] bring the top three pairs to 29.37% [13] and leave about 70.6% of volume in everything else [14].
The lead is modest and it narrowed. XRP was $19.07 million, or 15.1%, ahead of Bitcoin in the first reading [9] and $13.0 million, or 13.6%, ahead in the second [10]. Both pairs shrank between the readings, XRP by 25.6% and Bitcoin by 24.7% [11], so XRP kept first place because every pair cooled together. Crypto Briefing reports two straight days [16]. Bitcoin News describes the figures as 24-hour readings taken more than seven hours apart [17], so the second day is, or rather the second reading is, a window that overlaps the first by less than 17 hours (24 minus 7) [24].
Crypto Briefing says the block on offshore exchanges pushed more trading toward domestic venues like Upbit [19], and notes that regulators did not target XRP [20]. We would expect a block on offshore venues to lift every Upbit pair, so it does not by itself explain why XRP's pair would lead. The 2025 record points the same way: XRP's cumulative Upbit volume topped $1 trillion that year, ahead of Bitcoin's [26].
Korean buyers did not pay up. Upbit's XRP price converted to about $1.34 against $1.336 on Binance, a gap of roughly 0.3% [4]. Bitcoin News calls a kimchi premium the usual giveaway of a Korean retail frenzy [5] and describes this episode as a rotation story [6]. The price had also fallen about 9% between the Oct. 11 close and the Oct. 15 low [15].
The global side points elsewhere. Bitcoin News reported that XRP whales moved 1.67 billion tokens to Binance, a seven-month high for whale inflows [21]. At $1.34 that is about $2.2 billion [25], against the roughly $1.24 billion Upbit traded across all pairs in the Oct. 15 reading [12], though the comparison is loose because the transfers may span more than one day. U.S. XRP ETFs recorded net flows of minus $104,510 on $24.79 million of volume [22]. Bitcoin News concludes that someone in that chain is buying what the whales are selling [23].
In our view the evidence supports a narrow claim: XRP led Upbit's won pairs in two overlapping readings, at a price close to Binance's [4]. The same numbers fit more than one story. XRP may simply be at its usual rank on Upbit. Large holders may be selling into Korean bids, the reading the whale deposits invite. Or new retail money may be gathering in one token after the block closed the offshore alternatives. We put most weight on the first, some on the second and least on the third, and a premium opening well above the 0.3% gap would move us toward the third.
What to watch
- Whether XRP still tops Bitcoin on Upbit once the first week of the FIU block has passed.
- Whether XRP breaks below its $1.29 intraday low as the whale deposits to Binance settle.
- Upbit's total 24-hour volume against the roughly $1.24 billion in the Oct. 15 reading, as a gauge of how much trading the block moved onshore.
