Netanyahu says a FlyDubai pilot stabbed a colleague before the Israel-bound jet dropped 16,000 feet
FlyDubai's Israel-bound jet fell 16,000 feet in about a minute after one pilot stabbed the other, Benjamin Netanyahu said. If his account holds, the defence that failed was the airline's vetting of its own pilots.

What happened
- Tabuk's airport logged the distress call at 8:44 a.m. and the landing at 9:45 a.m. local time, 61 minutes apart.
- A passenger and a crew member broke into the cockpit as the plane dove, and other crew members took over flying, Netanyahu said.
- Before landing, the aircraft switched from a general distress call to a code signaling a hijacking, Semafor reported.
- The Tabuk airport said the captain and first officer were both injured and hospitalized, while Netanyahu said Saudi Arabia had arrested one pilot.
- FlyDubai confirmed an incident on flight FZ 1073 to Ben Gurion and said its teams were working closely with the relevant authorities, without giving details.

Why it matters
- decision Because the recovery depended on people getting into the cockpit mid-dive, any airline tightening flight-deck access after this has to weigh keeping an attacker out against keeping help out.
- capability Saudi Arabia has no formal ties with Israel yet took a suspected hijacking of an Israel-bound jet onto its own runway, so carriers on the route have evidence they can use Saudi diversion airports in a security emergency.
- contradiction Semafor's word for it is an altercation between the pilots; Netanyahu's is a stabbing followed by a crash attempt, and only his version supports treating the flight as a terror case.
The 16,000-foot figure comes from Flightradar24, which tracked the jet from 33,000 feet down to 17,000 in about a minute, some two and a half hours out of Dubai, before an erratic circle near the Jordanian border [3][1]. Semafor put the fall at more than 14,000 feet and said the plane then climbed sharply [4]. All passengers were reported safe [19]. It was not the first emergency landing in Saudi Arabia for a plane carrying Israelis home [16].
Almost everything known about the cockpit comes from Benjamin Netanyahu, who said the attacker apparently tried to crash the plane [2] and who was relaying what a passenger told him [5]. "I salute these heroes who showed exceptional resourcefulness and courage. They saved many lives and prevented a major disaster," Netanyahu said [18]. He has spent recent days warning of unspecified threats, with the anniversary of the October 7 attack days away and an election weeks away [17]. Haaretz reported that Israel is treating the flight as a potential terror attack [10]. Neither report says which pilot was detained, or puts a figure on fares, bookings or insurance for the route [6][7].
Investigators could find that one pilot acted deliberately. That puts the threat inside the airline, on a route into a country that runs some of the strictest airport security in the world, Israel-bound flights included [14]. They could instead find a violent quarrel between two crew members with no political motive. In that case FlyDubai has a personnel failure on its hands, with the same drop from 33,000 feet [3]. Or the account could shift as evidence comes in. The Israeli official who confirmed that warplanes were scrambled over hijacking fears spoke anonymously because the case was under investigation [8].
I think the first finding is the likeliest on the public record, given a stabbing described by the prime minister and a state treating it as potential terror [2][10]. The counter-case is that nearly every detail of the attack passes through a politician weeks from an election [17]. If the first finding holds, the spending needed to stop a repeat sits mostly with the airlines, in how they vet and monitor the people they put on the flight deck, because the screening Israel is known for happens at the airport [14]. An investigation concluding that no pilot tried to bring the aircraft down would undo that view.
What to watch
- Whether Saudi authorities say which of the two hospitalized pilots they arrested, and on what charge.
- Whether investigators confirm a deliberate crash attempt or settle on a fight between crew members, which decides whether Israel keeps the terror classification.
- Any schedule, crew or security change by FlyDubai or other carriers on UAE-Israel flights.
