Shopify says Canvas squeezes a two-week store build into a 20-minute Sidekick chat

Shopify's Ben Sehl says the company's new Canvas editor cuts a fully custom store build from two weeks of coding to about 20 minutes. Small merchants who once paid developers and agencies for that work can now do it themselves, while multi-region sellers wait on tools Canvas still lacks.

What happened

  • Canvas renders live from a store's theme code and lays every page out in one view, so Sidekick's edits appear on the real store as the merchant watches.
  • At launch Canvas does not support third-party theme app extensions, the add-ons outside developers build to plug into a store's design.
  • Shopify plans to add those extensions, along with its Rollouts, Markets and Translations tools, before Canvas becomes the default editor.
  • Weekly active shops using Sidekick grew 385% year over year in Q1 2026.
  • Shopify unveiled Canvas on October 1, 2026, and is rolling it out to merchants gradually over a few days.

Why it matters

  • exposure Developers and agencies hired for custom builds of small single-market stores lose work first, because those merchants can do the job inside Canvas from launch day.
  • constraint Outside developers' design add-ons reach Canvas users only after Shopify builds support for them, so their sales into the new editor run on Shopify's schedule.
  • decision Merchants selling across regions and languages have to split edits between two editors or hold off on Canvas until Markets and Translations arrive.
  • cost Every store designed through months of Sidekick sessions raises that merchant's cost of moving to another platform, as Crypto Briefing argues.

Take Sehl's figures at face value and count two weeks of coding as ten eight-hour working days [2]. That is 4,800 minutes of developer time against 20 minutes of chat, a ratio of 240 to one [1]. Crypto Briefing, which reported the launch, wrote that two weeks of coding "usually meant hiring a developer or agency" [12]. The report does not give an hourly rate for that work, so the saving cannot be priced in dollars.

Canvas draws its preview from the theme code itself [3], so a theme still sits under every edit. I think the theme keeps its value and the paid customization layered on top of it is what shrinks. Sidekick has moved from basic question-answering to multi-step admin tasks and intricate theme edits [8]. Merchants also used it to build more than 12,000 custom apps on eligible plans in Q1 2026 [9].

The launch gaps decide who moves first. Crypto Briefing describes Rollouts, Markets and Translations as the features that matter most to larger merchants selling across regions and languages [5]. Shopify is keeping its existing editor as the default until they ship [6]. The merchant who can use Canvas fully today runs a single-market shop with no outside design add-ons [4][5]. Crypto Briefing pictures that owner doing custom design "between packing orders" [12].

Sidekick's weekly active shop count is now 4.85 times its year-earlier level [2]. Fewer merchants use it than that growth suggests. About 42% of Shopify merchants used the company's AI features in Q1 2026 [11], and the other 58% did not [3].

Three outcomes fit this evidence. If the 20-minute figure holds and the gaps close quickly, Canvas becomes the default and Sidekick becomes the main way merchants change their stores [2][6]. If the gaps stay open, Canvas remains a tool for small single-market shops, and multi-region sellers keep the old editor and the agencies who work in it [5]. In a third version, extension support arrives and outside developers keep selling add-ons that Sidekick places, while the hourly build work goes [4]. I'd expect the first losses to fall on paid customization for small stores, with multi-region work protected until Markets and Translations ship [5].

The counter-case is that 20 minutes is Shopify's own launch figure, and Crypto Briefing made its conclusion conditional on whether the estimate "holds up in practice" [2][12]. The thesis fails if Canvas becomes the default and the share of merchants using AI features stays near 42% [11].

What to watch

  • Shopify adding third-party theme app extension support to Canvas, the gap that decides whether outside developers' add-ons work in the new editor.
  • The date Canvas replaces the existing editor as Shopify's default, once Rollouts, Markets and Translations ship.
  • Shopify's next figure for the share of merchants using its AI features, against about 42% in Q1 2026.
