Papertrade loses 94% of its open interest but only 41% of its deposits over a weekend

Papertrade's open interest fell 93.7%, from $11 billion to $693 million, in about a day, news.bitcoin.com reported. Deposits on the Hyperliquid-built exchange fell far less over the same stretch, so most of the cash outlasted most of the notional.

Papertrade's open interest was about $93 for every dollar of locked deposits on Saturday and about $10 for every dollar on Sunday, so leverage shrank much faster than deposits.

What happened

  • Total value locked on Papertrade went from $118 million on Saturday to $70 million on Sunday, a $48 million contraction, according to paperdash.xyz data.
  • Sunday's figures show that just $9.17 million is backing the exchange's outstanding positions.
  • Papertrade said on X that some traders tried to move bitcoin and ethereum prices by distorting the Hyperliquid best bid and offer quotes it uses to value positions.

Why it matters

  • exposure If the $9.17 million is posted margin, the average position is levered about 76 to 1, far under the 1,000x ceiling but thin enough that ordinary price swings reach the collateral.
  • constraint Because Papertrade values positions off Hyperliquid's best bid and offer, its defence against manipulation has to work on a quote that Hyperliquid sets.
  • contradiction Bitcoin.com News reads the drop as enthusiasm fading, yet Saturday's open interest was about $93 per dollar of deposits and Sunday's about $10, so much of what vanished was leverage that needed little cash.

Deposits were still leaving as the report closed. By then paperdash.xyz put Papertrade's total value locked at $67 million [7], which is 43.2% below the $118 million it showed on Saturday [11][4].

In our view the fragile figure was the notional one. A platform that offers 1,000x leverage [3] can post an $11 billion open interest number [1] on a small deposit base, and it can lose most of that number in a day without its depositors leaving in proportion. The counter-thesis is that cash is the slower leak. If TVL keeps falling toward zero while open interest holds near $693 million [1], the brittleness shows up in deposits too. If TVL settles near $67 million [7] and open interest rebuilds, the Sunday figure was a launch spike unwinding and the cash never left in earnest.

The first full day of trading also brought complaints about order priority. According to Bitcoin.com News, some traders were frustrated that smaller transactions did not get the same priority as larger orders [5]. Papertrade defended the approach, saying that indiscriminate prioritization would let thousands of tiny orders overwhelm the system and worsen processing delays [6]. On manipulation, Papertrade contends it anticipated such attacks and accounted for them during six months spent building its trading infrastructure [14]. Its answer to both complaints was to defend the design.

The evidence is one exchange over one weekend, in one outlet's figures. Papertrade is a newly launched perpetuals exchange built on Hyperliquid [8], and the report does not say whether the lost open interest was closed by traders or liquidated, what the $9.17 million behind the remaining positions consists of [12], or how any other Hyperliquid-built venue behaved in its first days.

What to watch

  • Whether paperdash.xyz TVL holds near $67 million or keeps falling over the coming week.
  • Any change by Papertrade to its order-priority rule or its use of Hyperliquid best bid and offer data.
  • First-week open interest and deposit figures from other perps exchanges built on Hyperliquid, which would show whether Papertrade's ratio is typical.
