Fermi Explorer Mission, founded by Starcloud co-founders, sets 2029 launch for 80,000-year coast to Alpha Centauri

The Fermi Explorer Mission says under $15 million and proven electric propulsion can put a kilogram of payload on a directed interstellar trajectory, which makes the launch the only part of the plan anyone alive will get to check.

What happened

  • A nonprofit called the Fermi Explorer Mission said on Sept. 1 that it intends to launch a small probe toward Alpha Centauri, the sun's nearest stellar neighbor at about 4.4 light-years, by 2029.
  • The crossing is expected to take roughly 80,000 years, and president Philip Johnston says none of the people building it will be alive for the arrival, which he describes as the point of the exercise.
  • Johnston founded the nonprofit with his Starcloud co-founders Ezra Feilden and Adi Oldean, and former U.S. Air Force officer Garrett Jamison runs day-to-day execution of the project.

Why it matters

Divide 4.4 light-years by 80,000 years and the plan's implied cruise speed falls out: about 0.0055 percent of light speed [18], using the distance and the duration the team itself gives [6][2]. That number is the engineering argument. Breakthrough Starshot, which space.com describes as apparently defunct, wanted roughly 20 percent of light speed and a 20-year crossing to Proxima Centauri, part of the same system [12], which is on the order of 3,600 times the speed Fermi Explorer is asking for [19]. Starshot's laser array was the part that never showed up. Fermi Explorer says it will most likely use electric propulsion, which already flies and is more efficient than chemical thrusters [11]. Giving up four orders of magnitude of speed in exchange for hardware you can order is a defensible trade, and it is the reason a 2029 launch is not, on its face, silly.

The budget is the second place to look. Under $15 million for the whole mission [9], for a vehicle the team puts at 100 to 200 kilograms on Earth [10], works out to between $75,000 and $150,000 per kilogram of spacecraft [20]. Tight, but that is a smallsat-class number, not a fantasy one. What it does not yet cover in any published form is who builds the bus and what the promised kilogram of payload actually does, both of which space.com lists among the unsettled details [17].

The claimed first is also narrower than it sounds. Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 are already in interstellar space; they are simply not aimed anywhere, having kept the heading their tour of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune left them with [7]. The novelty on offer is deliberate aim at a named star [8], not reach. The advisory roster the group has published, including former Blue Origin president Rob Meyerson and AstroForge chief executive Matt Gialich [5], is a signal about industry access rather than evidence about a trajectory.

Then there is the motive, which is where I would separate intent from measurement. The team says the launch will not solve the Fermi Paradox but will produce data we did not have [14], and its FAQ argues that afterwards "we will have more confidence" that leaving for a nearest star is not resource-prohibitive for an intelligent species, and that at least some species try [15]. The evidence generated is one attempt by one species, and it speaks, weakly, only to the third of the three explanations the group lists, the one about intelligent species not making themselves known [21]. The thing this doesn't tell you is anything about the other two, whether human-like intelligence is rare or whether it lasts. Philip Johnston, the nonprofit's president and Starcloud's chief executive [3], is straightforward about the horizon: "None of us will be here when this journey ends, and that is the point" [16]. Which puts the entire verifiable content of this mission before 2029, in the procurement.

What to watch

  • A signed launch contract or named launch vehicle, which would turn a 2029 intent into a schedule.
  • A named prime for the 100-to-200-kilogram bus and a payload spec, which would show whether the kilogram is instruments or ballast.
  • Post-launch tracking that puts an actual heading and cruise speed against the 0.0055-percent-of-light-speed figure the plan implies.
