What happened
- The largest check, $158 million, went to the Senate Leadership Fund, the main super PAC backing Republican Senate candidates, according to figures Musk's representatives gave the New York Times.
- More than $76 million went to America PAC, the group Musk founded in the 2024 election, which has built a voter-turnout operation in competitive Senate and House races.
- He also gave $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, which backs Ken Paxton, $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, $10 million to the Republican Governors Association and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.
- The figures surfaced days before Thursday's Federal Election Commission deadline, when political committees report their third-quarter finances.
Why it matters
- exposure Musk has money in the Texas Senate race and business in the state: Tesla, X and The Boring Company are headquartered there and SpaceX is expanding there. The Paxton money sits next to those operating assets.
- exposure The largest known midterm donor is also a major NASA and Pentagon contractor and, since Hegseth's appointment last month, co-director of Project Meridian. Anyone modeling SpaceX's federal exposure has to account for all three roles.
- constraint 'Biggest known donor' ranks disclosed money only, and every figure so far comes from Musk's side; the committees' own third-quarter filings are the first filed record to check them against.
The itemized gifts add up: $158 million, $76 million, $20 million, $10 million twice and $2 million sum to $276 million [19]. Nothing in the headline figure is left unexplained. The Senate Leadership Fund's share is $158 million of $276 million, or 57% [17], against $20 million for the leading House super PAC [8], a ratio of about eight to one [18]. We think that tilt is a preference for the Senate, and it can be wrong in two ways. America PAC's turnout operation works competitive Senate and House races alike [4]. That means the check sizes may overstate the chamber split. And the Senate Leadership Fund is the main super PAC for Republican Senate candidates [3]. Musk may have had few other places to put $158 million in one go.
For anyone pricing midterm policy risk, the $158 million measures what Musk will pay for a Republican Senate and is one input among several; the odds of a Republican Senate have to come from other evidence. The one polling average in the sources is from Texas. The Senate Leadership Fund has spent heavily this cycle to defend the majority, including in Texas, where Attorney General Ken Paxton is running against Democrat James Talarico [9]. Talarico leads 48.4% to 45.0% in FiftyPlusOne's average as of Oct. 12 [10], a gap of 3.4 points [21]. The sources do not say how the fund divides its money by state, so the $158 million cannot be tied to that race.
Musk's own forecast of his giving was lower. "In terms of political spending, I'm going to do a lot less in the future," Musk said in May 2025 [12], when he was stepping back after a highly visible role in the Trump administration and a public falling-out with the president [13]. The two have since repaired their relationship [14]. Musk has given more than $276 million since July [1], on top of about $90 million earlier in the cycle [20].
The Times first reported the numbers [6]. CNBC says Lindsey Curnutte, a spokesperson for America PAC, confirmed the $158 million figure on Monday [3]; SCMP says Andrew Romeo, a spokesman for Musk's super PAC, confirmed the numbers [6].
What to watch
- Thursday's FEC third-quarter filings: whether committee reports match the $158 million, $76 million and other figures Musk's representatives gave the Times.
- America PAC's filing: if its $76 million went mostly to House turnout work, the eight-to-one Senate tilt overstates a Senate preference.
- FiftyPlusOne's Texas average, where Talarico led by 3.4 points on Oct. 12.
