3M Ventures and Invest-NL put €40M into a 50-person Veldhoven nanoimprint toolmaker

Morphotonics' round is roughly four times the €9M first closing of its Series B in September 2024. The money is meant to carry a roll-to-plate imprint line into data center optics and chip packaging.

What happened

  • Morphotonics raised EUR 40M from a consortium including 3M Ventures, Innovation Industries, BOM and Invest-NL, money the Dutch company says will fund data center optics and semiconductor packaging.
  • The round follows a Series B first closing in September 2024 of over $10M, roughly EUR 9M, from three of the same investors, earmarked then for automation and a packaging pivot.
  • Morphotonics, which employs roughly 50 to 60 people in Veldhoven, has opened an office in China and established a contract manufacturing network.

Why it matters

  • decision A company of 50 to 60 people is now funding capacity for display optics, augmented reality waveguides, data center interconnects and advanced packaging at the same time, so the hiring and tool-build choices decide which of the four gets served first.
  • contradiction The stated destination is data center optics, and the only named commercial partner sits in consumer 3D displays. The AI-infrastructure framing rests on the use of funds; there is no order behind it.
  • exposure Invest-NL's entry puts Dutch public capital behind a private scale-up's execution risk, and the fund's stated test is European tech independence in semiconductors and photonics, not a return on this round alone.
  • constraint At between EUR 670,000 and EUR 800,000 per current employee, the round is large relative to the payroll it supports, and imprint capacity at 1.43 square meters per stamp has to be bought before it can be sold.

The first closing of the Series B, in September 2024, brought in over $10M, described as roughly €9M, from 3M Ventures, Innovation Industries and BOM [2]. This round is €40M, with Invest-NL added to those three [1]. Call it about 4.4 times the earlier check [1]. Spread across a staff of 50 to 60, it comes to between €670,000 and €800,000 per current employee [3][2].

The pitch is area. The roll-to-plate system stamps microscopic structures onto substrates as large as 1.1 by 1.3 meters [4], which is 1.43 square meters per stamp [3], and what it leaves behind are lenses, prisms and waveguides [4]. The founders learned the technique making optical discs at Philips [5].

Morphotonics says the capital goes to manufacturing capacity, headcount, and two adjacent markets at once: data center optics and advanced semiconductor packaging [6]. It has also opened an office in China and set up a contract manufacturing network [12]. In the data center the case is that photonics is replacing copper to move data faster with less energy [7]. The commercial anchor cryptobriefing names is Leia, a 3D display company in consumer electronics [8].

Revenue grew three to four times year over year in 2025, the first full year under Hugo da Silva, who became CEO in October 2024 [9]. The report gives no revenue figure and no data center customer [13].

The investor mix is the informative part. According to cryptobriefing, 3M Ventures brings materials science and manufacturing at scale [10], and Invest-NL is a Dutch state-backed fund that has been selectively deploying into companies it considers strategically important for Europe's tech independence, particularly in semiconductors and photonics [11]. All three of the 2024 backers returned, and the state fund joined them [1][2].

The likeliest version, in my view, is that display and augmented-reality waveguide work pays the bills for a while, and data center optics stays a qualification programme; the 2024 tranche was already earmarked for the packaging pivot [2], which makes packaging the older of the two adjacent bets. A second version has panel-level imprint winning packaging work and never getting near an interconnect. What would settle it is a named transceiver maker or operator as a customer, or imprint tools shipping into a packaging line. Until then, the data center half is a use-of-funds statement [6].

What to watch

  • Whether Morphotonics discloses a data center or optical transceiver customer, rather than a use-of-funds line.
  • Whether Invest-NL's entry is followed by further Dutch state co-investment in photonics tooling.
  • Whether imprint tools ship into an advanced packaging line, the market the 2024 tranche was already funding.
