Kishimoto returns to write and draw a new Naruto manga for 2027

Masashi Kishimoto will write and draw a new Naruto manga, Shadow Rising, due in 2027, unveiled Saturday at a New York Comic Con panel. The same panel added a Ninku crossover anime he supervises and a note from the live-action film's director, three efforts running at once.

What happened

  • The teaser promised that fuller details on Shadow Rising, its story and schedule, will come at Jump Festa 2027 in December.
  • Studio Pierrot, which has adapted both Naruto and Ninku before, is handling the crossover's animation.
  • The Naruto x Ninku crossover does not yet have a release window.
  • In the crossover, Kakashi assigns Team 7 a mission and names Naruto acting leader before the trio is lost in another world and meets a frog-faced boy named Fusuke.
  • The Shadow Rising teaser places the story as Naruto becomes the next Hokage, with Sasuke, Sakura and Kakashi present.

Why it matters

  • constraint The manga's 2027 target is the only firm date on the slate, so the return lands in pieces with no coordinated moment for retailers or streamers to plan to.
  • cost Fans are asked to hold years of attention before the anime and film have dates.
  • precedent A manga, a crossover anime and a studio film moving together keep Naruto in front of audiences for years, where a single sequel would have been one release.

The one genuinely new work on the slate is the manga, and it is the one Kishimoto makes himself. He is writing and drawing Shadow Rising [2]. The crossover is a different arrangement. Kishimoto and Ninku creator Koji Kiriyama supervise it rather than draw it [5]. The film sits further out, with director Destin Daniel Cretton attached [9]. Of those three, only the manga has him at the drawing board [12].

When a franchise returns on several fronts at once, the split between who makes and who supervises matters. A sequel brings the maker back to the core work, while a brand extension licenses the name to other hands. Shadow Rising is a sequel; the crossover and the film are closer to brand extensions. The panel order said the same. The manga came only as a teaser at the very end [1].

Cretton did not appear in person; he sent a video message with no concrete details. The worldwide casting search for Team 7, he noted, began this summer [11]. He signed off, "thank you for your passion, your patience, and for being along for the ride" [10].

For an operator bringing back an old product line, the question these reveals answer unevenly is which pieces bring the original creator back to the work and which only reuse the name. On Naruto, Kishimoto is drawing one book and supervising, or stepping back from, the other two [2][5][9].

What to watch

  • Jump Festa 2027 in December, the first promised look at Shadow Rising's actual story and schedule.
  • A release window for the Naruto x Ninku crossover anime, which still has none.
  • A release date or casting announcement for Cretton's live-action Naruto film.
