Kakao dates KakaoTalk's multi-agent space to the first half of 2027, after a December beta

Kakao opened sign-ups on the 13th for a December closed beta of Kanana Space, an AI assistant inside KakaoTalk. Four of the eight tasks it names, including orders and money transfers, wait for an undated upgrade.

Half of Kanana Space's named tasks await an upgrade Two separate measures: time left in the first half of 2027 after a December beta start, and the tasks named for Kanana Space.

Three figures, each its own measure. A December beta start leaves at most 7 months before the first half of 2027 ends. Separately, 8 tasks are named for Kanana Space, and 4 of them are in a planned upgrade.

What happened

  • Kanana Space opens with a two-finger swipe on the KakaoTalk screen that brings up Ryan, the company's character, and takes requests by voice or text.
  • In Kakao's example, a user who asks the assistant to order bottled water gets the previously ordered brand, any coupons applied, and the whole sequence from order to payment prepared.
  • Kanvas is a PC-based service where a user describes the agent needed and Kanvas connects the matching tools and skills to assemble it.

Why it matters

  • decision Teams building agents can start in Kanvas or in another framework and still aim at the KakaoTalk space, since Kakao says both will be supported there.
  • exposure Project Mosaic, still in preparation, is meant to pass each agent only the information it needs, so the permission design would set what outside agents can see of a user's context.
  • capability If the agent-sharing feature ships, user-built agents become content that Kakao does not have to build itself.

Start with the sequencing. Of the eight tasks en.sedaily.com's report names for Kanana Space, four are things the assistant can be asked to do (sending messages, managing schedules, searching the web, changing KakaoTalk settings) [5] and four belong to a planned upgrade (orders, gifts, reservations, transfers) [1]. Half the list is still a plan [14]. A December beta for some of those who sign up in advance [6] is therefore a test of the first half, on the report's own description.

We think the platform case turns on the first-half-2027 agent space [12], and the schedule leaves little slack: a December start gives at most seven months to the end of June [15]. If the space opens on time and accepts agents built outside Kanvas [13], KakaoTalk is a platform for agents. If it opens with Kanvas agents only, it is a distribution channel for Kakao's own tools. The counter-thesis is schedule risk, and Kakao's own wording carries some of it: the Kanvas beta is scheduled for a small group of users as early as this year [8].

Chung Shin-ae framed the plan as an extension of what KakaoTalk already connects. "Now we want to expand the connections Kakao has built into a new layer," the CEO said at the if(kakao)26 keynote [3][4]. Kim Dae-nyeon, who leads design at Kakao, said: "We want to make the many possibilities of KakaoTalk easier to tap with a single spoken request." [10]

The report does not include a date for the ordering upgrade, KakaoTalk user figures, a budget, or the merchants and payment providers behind the order and transfer steps. In our view the contender label rests on the roadmap alone until those appear, and it fails if the first half of 2027 closes with the upgrade still undated.

What to watch

  • A date, and named merchant and payment partners, for the Kanana Space upgrade covering orders, gifts, reservations and transfers.
  • Whether the Kanvas closed beta starts before the year ends and whether the agent-sharing feature arrives with it.
  • Any waitlist or beta-size figure for Kanana Space, the first usage number against which the platform claim could be measured.
