Ithaca Holdings prices Bumble at under a tenth of its 2021 peak value
Ithaca Holdings agreed to buy Bumble for $1.3bn, and directors Ravi Gupta and John Hegeman will replace founder Whitney Wolfe Herd as co-CEOs. Wolfe Herd says she will stay involved, though the BBC reports her role is unclear.

Key figures: Ithaca Holdings agreed to buy Bumble for $1.3 billion. Bumble's valuation peaked at more than $14bn after it floated on the Nasdaq in 2021. A jump in Bumble's share price pushed its valuation to over $580m.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ithaca's agreed price for Bumble | $1.3bn | 1 | |
| Peak valuation, 2021, over | $14bn | 6 | |
| Post-jump valuation, over | $580m | 15 |
What happened
- Bumble shares jumped on Monday on reports of advanced takeover talks and had risen by more than 50% by the time the deal was confirmed, the BBC reported.
- Bumble abandoned its women-first chat rule in August, when the loss-making company stopped limiting first messages to women.
- In its time as a public company Bumble has reported a pre-tax profit only once, according to the BBC.
- Gupta spent four years in C-suite roles at Instacart before joining Sequoia as a partner, and Hegeman was Meta's chief revenue officer and sits on Robinhood's board.
Why it matters
- contradiction Wolfe Herd said in the press release that Ithaca "believes in our women-first mission". The chat rule that gave the mission its product form is already gone, so what Ithaca has committed to keep is a stated mission.
- exposure Ithaca takes on Bumble's unfinished AI dating product, which the company told investors was "revolutionary" and on which Raymond James analyst Andrew Marok had "real doubts" about delays. Business Insider expects Ithaca to try to turn it around.
- precedent Match Group's shares have also fallen sharply from their 2021 peak. A buyer paying more than double a depressed share price for Bumble gives Match's investors a reference point, and we would expect them to use it.
The founder-led era is ending at the top of the org chart, and it had been interrupted once already. Wolfe Herd held the CEO job until January 2024, when Lidiane Jones took over, and she returned as CEO in 2025 [9]. Business Insider reports that the announcement describes her as a close partner after the deal [5].
Set against its own history, the price is small. Bumble's valuation peaked above $14bn after its 2021 Nasdaq float [6], so Ithaca's $1.3bn is at most 9.3% of the peak [22]. The $6.05 per share offer is more than double the average price, which sank below $3 in September [24].
The comparison with current market value is less clean. The BBC puts Bumble's valuation at over $580m after the share jump [15]. Measured against $580m, the $1.3bn is about 2.2 times as large [23]. The BBC and Business Insider do not say what the $1.3bn covers, so we would not treat the two figures as like for like.
The sequence invites a causal story: the women-first chat rule went in August [7], and a buyer followed. Wolfe Herd's August explanation was about users. "Today, our community is asking for more flexibility, less pressure, and more opportunities to create real, meaningful connections and that is what this new experience provides," she said [10]. The pressure on the business was older than the rule change. Bumble said in 2025 that it would cut almost a third of its workforce [17], and Ofcom reported that year that UK adults were spending less time on dating apps than three years earlier [18].
The leadership design carries a tradeoff between brand authority and owner control. Gupta and Hegeman are the first men to serve as Bumble CEOs since the company listed [8]. In 2020 Wolfe Herd told a blog that "our C-suite is 95% women" [12]. In our view, a co-CEO pair and a founder who stays involved give three people a claim on product direction.
What to watch
- The closing date and approval steps: neither report gives them, and they set when Gupta and Hegeman take over from Wolfe Herd.
- Whether Ithaca puts Wolfe Herd's role in writing, since Business Insider calls her a close partner and the BBC calls her role unclear.
- Whether the new owners keep the August change to the chat rule, given the press-release language about a women-first mission.
