Hyundai's SUVs reshaped its India sales mix far more than its volume
Hyundai has sold 9,884,960 vehicles in India since 1998, SIAM data show, leaving it 115,040 short of 10 million. Its record 2024 total beat 2016's by at most a fifth, so the 150,000 units of extra Pune capacity planned for 2030 lean heavily on exports.

What happened
- The Creta, built around Indian buyers and launched in 2015, led monthly SUV sales for three months straight and sold more than 40,000 units in its first year.
- Chief Executive Jose Munoz said at the 2026 CEO Investor Day that Hyundai aims to lift the SUV share of its India sales to 80% by 2030.
- Hyundai's highest market share in India, 17.4%, came in 2020, when the Venue and Creta were driving sales together.
Why it matters
- contradiction The report says the SUV range turned into strong sales, but its own 2025 SUV count implies total sales fell below the 2024 record in a year when the SUV share rose.
- constraint Munoz's 80% needs about 3 points of mix a year to 2030, slower than the up to 5 a year gained from 2021 to last year, so the target is within the trend only if this year's dip reverses.
- decision Raising the SUV share means SUVs must outgrow the rest of the range, the reverse of this year's pattern, and the new Bayon is the model Hyundai has named for that job in 2026.
Hyundai first topped 500,000 sales in a year in India in 2016 [10]. Its best year since then, 2024, came to 605,433 [12]. That is at most 21% more over eight years, or about 2.4% a year compounded [19]. Over the same period SUVs grew from a new line to more than half of Hyundai's sales, a mark they passed in 2021 [5]. On those figures, the SUVs mostly took share from the rest of Hyundai's own range. SUVs were under half of sales in 2016, so Hyundai sold more than 250,000 other cars that year. This year its non-SUV sales came to 155,698 through September, a pace of about 207,600 for the full year [20].
Seoul Economic Daily credits the Creta, launched in 2015, with Hyundai's revival in India [3], and says the broader SUV range translated into strong sales [16]. The car was designed for local conditions: a roomy cabin for extended families, high ground clearance for poor roads and a built-in cabin air purifier [4]. Locally developed models still make up most of the SUV volume. The Exter, Creta and Alcazar sold 282,666 units last year [6], about 70.9% of Hyundai's SUV sales in India [26]. The report does not give Hyundai's market share for any year after its 2020 peak [11].
Last year's figures contain a puzzle. The 398,937 SUVs Hyundai sold were close to 70% of its total [6], yet the same number is 65.9% of 2024's 605,433 [21]. Any SUV share above that puts last year's total below the record. This year is running faster: 471,724 sales through September annualize to about 629,000 [22]. At roughly 52,400 a month, the cumulative count passes 10 million in December [18], in line with the paper's expectation of a crossing this year [2]. SUVs were 67.0% of this year's sales [7], a little below last year's share, so for now the rest of the range is growing faster [28].
Hyundai's plan for India is about plants and parts. Chennai can build 824,000 vehicles a year and Pune 170,000 [13]. Home sales in the record year of 2024 equal about 61% of that 994,000 [23]. Pune is due to reach 250,000 units by 2028 and 320,000 by 2030 [14], adding 150,000 for a total of 1,144,000 [24]. Hyundai also wants more than 90% of its parts sourced locally and exports of up to 30% of output by 2030 [15]. The reported expansion is entirely at Pune [14].
The plan can go one of three ways. Indian buyers could hold this year's pace and grow into the new plants alongside exports. Or the SUV share could climb toward the 80% Munoz has set [8] while total volume stays near 600,000, leaving exports to fill Pune. In the third case the mix slides further below 67%, and the new Bayon [9] and the Exter take buyers from the Creta instead of adding new ones. We think the second is the most likely. Eight years of roughly 2.4% annual growth at home [19] is the record the expansion has to beat. The case against us is this year's 629,000 pace [22]. If full-year 2026 sales clear 605,433 with the SUV share back near 70%, home demand is stronger than we credit.
What to watch
- SIAM's October to December figures, which will show whether Hyundai's cumulative count crosses 10 million in December at its current pace of about 52,400 a month.
- Bayon sales after launch, and whether Creta and Exter volumes hold up alongside it or fall as it sells.
- Any export share Hyundai reports from India as Pune moves toward 250,000 units of capacity in 2028, measured against its goal of up to 30% of output.

- [18]
At the January-September 2026 pace of about 52,400 a month, the remaining 115,040 units take about 2.2 months, putting the 10 million crossing in December.
- [19]
Hyundai's 2024 record of 605,433 was at most 21% above its 2016 total of more than 500,000, about 2.4% a year compounded over eight years.
- [20]
Hyundai sold more than 250,000 non-SUVs in India in 2016 (total above 500,000, SUV share below half); non-SUV sales through September 2026 were 155,698, an annualized pace of about 207,600.
- [21]
Last year's 398,937 SUVs equal 65.9% of 2024's 605,433, so any SUV share above 65.9%, including one close to 70%, implies last year's total sales were below the 2024 record.

- [24]
The Pune expansion adds 150,000 units of capacity by 2030, for a total of 1,144,000 in India.
- [25]
Reaching an 80% SUV share from 67.0% requires 13 more percentage points of mix by 2030, about 3 points a year.
- [26]
The Exter, Creta and Alcazar accounted for about 70.9% of Hyundai's India SUV sales last year.
- [27]
SUV share rose from just over 50% in 2021 to close to 70% last year, up to about 5 points a year; the 80% target needs about 3 points a year from 2026's 67.0%.
- [28]
Because the SUV share fell from close to 70% last year to 67.0% in January-September 2026, Hyundai's non-SUV sales are growing faster than its SUV sales this year.
