Hanwha's wheeled K9 howitzer becomes the Army's XM1776 prototype
Hanwha Aerospace delivered the first wheeled K9 howitzer prototype to the US Army, which named it XM1776 after a contract signed in August. The Army drops the X and calls it the M1776 once it clears testing.
The Investor · Invest desk

What happened
- The August contract covers prototypes of the K9MH, the wheeled version of the K9 self-propelled howitzer, for the Army's Mobile Tactical Cannon program.
- The XM1776 name was unveiled at the Association of the United States Army exposition in Washington, with Lt. Gen. Frank Lozano, who oversees fires acquisition, attending.
- The prototype was built in Changwon, South Gyeongsang, and flown from Korea on Sept. 24, the first day of the Chuseok holiday, for display at the show.
- Hanwha is also building an ammunition plant at Pine Bluff Arsenal in Arkansas for 155-millimeter shell components and propellant charges, shown at its booth as a diorama.
Why it matters
- constraint The Army removes the X only on formal adoption, so every reported term belongs to the prototype stage and the August order is a test-stage purchase.
- decision Hanwha is placing production bases in Alabama and Arkansas before the howitzer clears testing, so plant spending on US soil will precede any M1776 order.
- contradiction Seoul Economic Daily says the number 1776 carries the message that the K9 should become a howitzer that defends American freedom. The message rides on a prototype that has not yet cleared testing.
The contract was signed in August [2] and the prototype left Korea on Sept. 24 [6]. Depending on the day of signing, the gap was between 24 days (Aug. 31) and 54 days (Aug. 1) [13]. A prototype built in Changwon and loaded for a flight inside that window was, we think, under way before the contract was signed.
A Hanwha Aerospace official linked on-time delivery to trust: delivering the prototype "on schedule" is part of how "we will establish ourselves as a partner the U.S. Army can trust" [8], in the translation Seoul Economic Daily printed. The reports do not include the delivery date the Army set, a contract value, a prototype count or a test timetable. The claim of punctuality cannot be checked from outside.
Our view is that Hanwha has secured a place in the Army's test, with the sale still ahead of it. The counter-thesis is that a vehicle in hardware within 54 days of signing [13] is a stronger bid than a design on paper, and that a service naming a prototype built in Korea [6] for the 250th anniversary of its independence [11] has more than a test in mind. A published production quantity would show we undersold it. A failed test would show we oversold it.
The stand at the exposition covered about 300 square meters and held more than the wheeled gun: the tracked K9, the K10 ammunition resupply vehicle, the Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher and launchers for the M-SAM and L-SAM [9], five other systems in all [12].
What to watch
- Whether the Army drops the X after testing and issues an M1776 designation for the wheeled K9.
- Any disclosure of the Mobile Tactical Cannon contract value or the number of prototypes ordered.
- A start date or investment figure for the Pine Bluff Arsenal ammunition plant.
