Convert the two gauge readings into rates and they stop being abstract. A 1.16-inch total in about 45 minutes is roughly 1.5 inches per hour [10][22]. At Phantom Creek, 6.5 feet is 78 inches of water height in the same span, an average of about 1.7 inches of rise every minute [12][23]. The gauges sit on different creeks, each measuring its own flow independently. What they establish together is the exchange rate a narrow reach applies to unremarkable-sounding rain.
That exchange rate is geomorphology. Steep gradients and narrow passageways gather water and hand it to a channel with nowhere to spread, so levels climb fast in the confined space [16]. It is also why a flood can arrive under a clear sky, fed by rain that fell upstream or outside the canyon altogether [15]. The hydrology compounds the geometry: in arid ground of the kind found in Arizona, dry soil forms hardened crusts that shed water rather than absorb it, and thin vegetation gives runoff a fast path downslope [17]. The thing this does not tell you is how exposed anyone was. Neither account reports how many people were in the narrow reaches that afternoon [26], so there is no denominator and no fatality rate to compare against any other monsoon day. Two rescued survivors described the water rising over the trail while they clung to a ledge [4]; that testimony speaks to the speed of the event, and it says nothing about the population at risk.
Nor does the geology yet translate into a timetable. The practical guidance on offer is careful craft: know your escape routes before descending, carry a light and a whistle, ask rangers about conditions, check the forecast for the surrounding area rather than only your location, stay high, listen [19]. Useful, and none of it is specific to a burned drainage in monsoon season. Neither account reports any change to permits, closures, or descent timing [25].
The precedent for what intensity does in dry country is older than this storm. In 2018, a flash flood in Israel's Tzafit Canyon, terrain the phys.org geologist describes as similar to the reach that flooded on 29 August, killed 10 recent high school graduates after roughly a year's worth of rain fell nearby in a day [18]. Arid canyons kill on rainfall intensity, not on annual totals, and the drought that makes water scarce in this basin is part of what makes the ground refuse it.
