Ellison puts a shared streaming platform ahead of a single HBO Max and Paramount+ app

David Ellison told Skydance staff that HBO Max and Paramount+, priced at $18.49 and $13.99 ad-free, will share one tech platform before becoming one app. A discounted bundle covers the interim while the merged service's name and price stay open.

What happened

  • At Wednesday's town hall, Ellison called running separate streaming stacks inefficient and said the shared platform would be built as quickly as possible.
  • Ellison described a mutual ingest bundle in which bundle customers would see both HBO Max and Paramount+ content inside either app.
  • HBO chief Casey Bloys will run Skydance's streaming business after Paramount streaming head Cindy Holland stepped down.
  • Skydance must pay down about $80 billion in debt following the Paramount-WBD deal.

Why it matters

  • constraint Engineering effort goes first to moving two services onto one stack, so a single app cannot ship until that migration is done.
  • cost The bundle discount is the first price Skydance sets while carrying its deal debt. It is the earliest public evidence of whether that debt reaches subscribers.
  • exposure Paramount+ goes into the platform merger without its own streaming chief, so decisions on the combined technology sit under an HBO executive.
  • precedent Skydance is keeping CNN and its film studios as distinct brands too, so merging systems while keeping names looks like the company's general approach.

Ellison's case for building the platform first rests on data and revenue, and neither depends on a brand. "That allows you to build better personalization systems, better recommendation systems, allows you to monetize better," he told staffers [5]. In my view the order is sound. A name and a price can be settled once the system underneath works, while a single app launched over two stacks would carry the inefficiency Ellison described into the new product.

The interim bundle is the first place the merger shows up in what customers pay. HBO Max's ad tier costs $10.99 a month and Paramount+'s costs $8.99 [7]. A household taking both today pays $32.48 a month without ads and $19.98 with them [18]. The ad-free gap between the two services is $4.50 [17], and a unified service will eventually need one price across that gap [2].

Mike Proulx of Forrester put the skeptical view on price. "Because the Paramount-WBD deal was financed with a massive amount of debt, it's hard to imagine that streaming price hikes aren't in Skydance's future," he said [19]. Ellison's plan offers a second source of revenue, better monetization from one system [5], but that arrives only after the platform is built. The debt has to be paid down regardless [10].

Film spending has less room to move. Under its settlement with 12 states, Skydance committed to 30 theatrical releases in each of 2027 and 2028, and 32 a year from 2029 through 2031 [15].

The same sequence, shared systems with separate names, appears outside streaming. Business Insider reports that Ellison appears set on keeping CNN a separate brand from CBS, and he said the network will have "complete editorial independence" [12]. Co-CEO Ynon Kreiz said Skydance wants to "cherish and celebrate" its film studios and "keep their identity very strong" [14]. Asked by CNN's Anderson Cooper how CNN and CBS could work together, Ellison said he was still working out the details and suggested sharing resources or talent [13]. "You can only be so smart from the outside looking in," he said, adding that "within, usually, 120 days," new leaders should "be able to start to make those decisions" [16].

Business Insider's account does not say whether the shared platform will start from HBO Max's technology, Paramount+'s, or new code, or when a migration would finish. That choice falls inside the business now run by Casey Bloys, the HBO chief [11]. The bundle price is the nearer decision. The stack choice comes later, and it sets how long two apps run side by side before one replaces them [2].

What to watch

  • The discount Skydance sets on the HBO Max and Paramount+ bundle, and whether standalone prices move with it.
  • Whether Skydance says which existing stack the shared platform starts from, and gives a migration date.
  • Any CNN-CBS sharing of resources or talent announced inside the roughly 120-day window Ellison described for new leaders.
