Discord estimates the age of more than 90% of users from account signals alone
Discord's delayed age assurance starts this week, filing accounts as Adult, Teen or Unconfirmed from signals like account age, servers and games. The seven ways to prove you are 18 exist for the minority the model cannot place.

What happened
- Discord announced global age assurance in February and then pushed it to the second half of 2026, saying it would use the time to add verification options and publish more about its vendors.
- The rollout that began this week files accounts into one of three groups: Adult for 18 and over, Teen for 13 to 17, and Unconfirmed when Discord does not have enough information to decide.
- The model reads account signals including connected communities, servers and games, how many servers the user is active in, and how long the account has existed.

Why it matters
- constraint The privacy-light options are unevenly available: Google Wallet's age check runs off passports from five countries, so users elsewhere are steered back toward the ID scan or video selfie that Discord delayed the rollout to avoid depending on.

Open User Settings this week and there is a row called Account Status showing which age group Discord has already put the account in. The sorting happens first. The notification, such as it is, waits in a settings menu that takes several days to reach everyone [6].
Discord's figure for how many people this spares is more than 90% [2], which leaves up to roughly a tenth of the user base facing a prompt [3]. That is a forecast of how the model will perform, not a record of how it did, and Discord acknowledged the estimate will not always be right [7]. The rollout details do not include an error rate [4].
For the users who do have to prove adulthood, there are seven routes [1]: a credit card, the Apple App Store, the Google Play Store, Google Wallet, AgeKey, a video selfie, or an ID scan, with availability depending on region and device [8]. February's plan had two, facial age estimation or an ID scan, and Discord delayed it after complaints about the personal data both methods collect [9]. Five of the seven are new [2]. The App Store and Play options pass an age range without the exact birthdate [11]. Google Wallet works off an existing passport-based ID pass, currently supporting passports from Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and the US [12]. AgeKey issues a reusable credential that works across other supported services [13].
The credit card path is the one that will generate support tickets. Card details go through k-ID to Stripe to confirm the card belongs to an authorised adult, and Discord says neither it nor k-ID receives them [10]. Stripe may place a small temporary charge on the card, refunded within 14 business days [10].
Discord also said it will require any third-party age assurance vendor to delete a user's information permanently once its service is finished, and that facial age estimation has to run entirely on the user's device, according to Engadget [18]. The assigned group is not shown on a profile or shared with other server members [19].
An adult the model files as Unconfirmed does not lose much at first. Nothing about ordinary use requires confirmation; the prompt appears when an unconfirmed account reaches age-restricted content, spaces or settings [14]. Teen accounts keep friend messaging and voice calls, with non-friend messages routed to Message Requests, a warning before accepting friend requests from people with no mutual friends or small shared server, sensitive images blurred or blocked, and no access to adult servers, channels or bot commands [15]. Teens also lose profile and activity visibility to anyone outside friends and smaller shared servers [16]. Unconfirmed accounts get most of that treatment, but their full profile and activity can still be seen by friends [17].
The design carries over to any team asked to build the same gate. A wrong classification blocks close to none of the product, so a bad guess costs the user only a narrow set of surfaces [14]. The correction sits in a settings screen the miscategorised user has to go find on their own [6][7]. A gate on the core loop changes the second of those, because the appeal has to be on the blocked screen instead.
What to watch
- Whether Discord publishes the vendor list and technical documentation it promised when it delayed the rollout in February.
- Whether Google Wallet's passport-based age check expands past Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and the US.
- Whether the appeal path moves from the Account Status settings screen into the screens that actually block an unconfirmed user.
