Apple's software chief agrees the iPhone Duo can fill an iPad mini owner's space

Craig Federighi told MKBHD the iPhone Duo can often fill the space an iPad mini filled for its owner. The only usage he cited was his own over the past few months.

What happened

  • Craig Federighi sat down with MKBHD this week to talk about the new iPhone Duo, and the conversation turned to how much the foldable overlaps an iPad.
  • The usage he cited was his own over the last few months: starting on the iPhone, sitting down, then opening the device in portrait to page through longer content.
  • He also said other devices stretch or cram an existing experience into a new form factor, while Apple designed the Duo's experience from the start.

Why it matters

  • decision An iPad mini owner weighing a pre-order now has Apple's software lead on record that one device can cover the other's reading. That puts the comparison inside Apple's own lineup rather than against a rival's.
  • constraint One executive's months with a pre-release unit cannot tell you whether mini owners keep both devices. The size of the overlap stays unknown outside Apple until someone measures usage on the older device.
  • contradiction The same answer supports two readings, coexistence on the iPad-and-Mac model and outright replacement of the mini. Apple has not settled which one it is planning for.
  • precedent Once a software chief says a new product fills an older one's space, the iPad mini's next update becomes the test of whether that was a positioning remark or a product decision.

An iPad mini owner sits down with something long to read and reaches for the mini. Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering [1], described that same moment with the iPhone Duo in his hand. The device is "extraordinary to open up, often in portrait actually, and page through some content", he said [4]. He has been using it for months, longer than any buyer has [4]. He is the only person quoted using the device [9].

On the overlap itself he said, "But I agree, for someone who maybe had an iPad mini or something, this device can often fill that space for them" [5]. The frame he put around that was coexistence. He compared the decision to the one between an iPad and a Mac, where people fell into "very natural patterns", and said he expects the same between the iPad and the iPhone Duo [3]. The published interview has no sales figures and no usage data, and it does not say what Apple plans for the iPad mini [8].

For anyone shipping a product whose job overlaps an older product's job, those two readings imply different forecasts. An owner who buys the Duo and stops charging the mini has substituted. An owner who buys the Duo and keeps the mini for reading at home has added a device. Both look identical on the day of sale, and they separate later, in how deep the usage on the older device goes and how long it holds.

Federighi also talked up the work of fitting iOS to the new form factor [10]. "I think on a lot of other devices, it's been, 'We're just going to stretch out or cram some other experience into whatever the new form factor is.' For us, this was like, 'This whole thing, we're going to design it right from the start,'" he said [6]. He is describing how the software was built, and that is a different measurement from which device a buyer stops carrying.

I'd test a line like his against the sessions the older product actually gets in a week, and against the ones the new product wins only when the older product is in another room. What is left is the set of jobs the new thing cannot absorb, whatever the first month of orders looks like. 9to5Mac, which ran the interview, asked its readers whether they plan to pre-order the Duo next month [7]. Federighi's own forecast is looser than any list: "I think people are going to find their way" [4].

What to watch

  • Whether the iPad mini gets another hardware update at the next lineup refresh, or stays on its current model.
  • How Apple positions the Duo against the iPad in its own marketing when pre-orders open next month.
  • Any usage or retention figures Apple publishes for iPad owners who buy a Duo.
