Apple's $2,000 Duo copies the iPad mini's job at nearly three times the price

The buyer to think about is the one who bought an iPad mini to take notes standing up, with a Pencil stuck to its side. Gizmodo's reviewer is that buyer, calling the tablet "often my personal pick for a tablet that can easily take notes when I have little desk space to work with" ^[11]. For that job the swap fails on hardware before it reaches software. The mini has a magnetic attachment point for the Pencil and the Duo has none ^[9], and stylus support on the Duo stops at the Apple Pencil USB-C, not the Pencil Pro ^[8]. Gizmodo wrote that the mini's magnets "were already relatively weak, which often defeats the purpose" ^[10].

Now the price. The Duo is $2,000 ^[2]. An iPad mini with cellular is $700 after recent increases ^[4]. That is $1,300 per device ^[17], or about 2.9 times the tablet ^[18]. For a shared pool of ten units on a dock or in a clinic, the same swap takes the hardware line from $7,000 to $20,000 ^[19]. Substitution only arises for someone already buying a $2,000 phone, and then the mini is the second purchase under question.

The software change is real and bounded. Apple moved the iPhone dock from the bottom to the right side so a wider 1:4 screen can be operated one-handed, open or closed ^[5]. The mini's dock holds 11 apps against the phone's four ^[6], 2.75 times as many ^[20]. iPadOS 26 already put several apps on screen at once, and Gizmodo's argument is that this matters less on a panel the size of the mini's ^[7].

The overlap in inches is close. The Duo's inner display is 0.7 inch smaller on the diagonal, roughly 92 percent of the mini's 8.3 inches ^[21][3]. That similarity, plus Apple's own TikTok ad after Wednesday's event staging the phone and the tablet on a candle-lit dinner date ^[15], is the only support offered for the idea of the phone eating the tablet. Gizmodo's piece does not include sales or product-mix figures for either device, and it cites no Apple statement on the mini's future beyond a Bloomberg-sourced report of an OLED upgrade ^[22][1]. The M-series mini in the piece is Gizmodo's own proposal, not a plan Apple has described ^[13]. The article also gives the tablet as 8.3 inches in one passage and 8.4 in another ^[16].

Two things settle it for anyone holding a fleet of minis. The first is whether the work needs a pen parked on the device, or the Pencil Pro's pressure and haptics. If it does, Gizmodo's advice points at an 11- or 13-inch iPad Air or iPad Pro ^[14]. The second is whether the device gets handed to someone who does not own it. A $2,000 phone with one person's messages on it stays with one person. If neither applies, the comparison is a $700 line item against a $1,300 premium on a phone already in the budget ^[17][4].
