Set that against the paid tier. Xfinity Shield Select runs $15 a month for an indoor camera and a door/window sensor, with cloud video storage and a 24/7 urgent response service [8]. The other consequence is a passive sensing layer with no physical tell. There is no camera in the corner and no new indicator light, and the only control the report describes is the app toggle [5]. The Verge's account does not say where the motion processing happens, what motion data is retained, or for how long [18]. Kuda said the company believes this is "the foundation for what we think we can do with more advanced use cases" [15], and the source lists potential uses from home security to aging in place [16].
Precedent is mixed. Linksys launched a similar service in 2021 and discontinued it a few years later [12]; Wiz shipped Wi-Fi-sensing bulbs in 2023 and Philips Hue has deployed radio-frequency sensing using Zigbee [13]. ADT recently acquired Origin Wireless, one of the original Wi-Fi sensing companies [14].
