Celltrion clears its own 500 billion won profit target by 2% on a 34% operating margin

Celltrion reported preliminary third-quarter operating profit of 510 billion won, up 69.2% from a year earlier, on revenue of 1.5 trillion won. It is the third straight quarter above the company's own target, and Celltrion credits next-generation biosimilars and lower costs.

What happened

  • Operating margin widened 4.7 percentage points to 34% while revenue grew 45.8%, so profit outran sales.
  • Omlyclo is sold in 26 European countries and held more than 90% of the market in Spain as of July, according to Seoul Economic Daily.
  • In the US in August, Steqeyma held 15% and Yuflyma 11%, while the older Truxima and Inflectra held 39% and 31%.
  • Omlyclo launched in the US in October as the first biosimilar of its kind there, and Celltrion projects it will contribute to fourth-quarter earnings.

Why it matters

  • exposure Celltrion expects more than 98% of the Danish market by year-end on the strength of one national tender win, so that share is only as durable as one tender award.
  • capability Celltrion says the direct-sales network built around its established products increasingly supports newer biosimilars, so each new launch starts with a sales channel that already exists.
  • constraint Management has tied its fourth-quarter and full-year targets to two named drivers, the US launch of Omlyclo and increased supply in Europe, so a shortfall in either goes straight to the target.

Working back from the reported growth rates, Celltrion earned about 301 billion won a year earlier on revenue of about 1.03 trillion won [20][21]. That is a margin of roughly 29.3% [23], consistent with the 4.7 point gain to 34% [3]. Revenue added about 471 billion won and operating profit about 209 billion won, so each extra won of sales carried about 44 won of operating profit [22] (a rough figure, since the reported 1.5 trillion won is rounded).

Celltrion credits a growing share of higher-margin next-generation biosimilars and streamlined production [5]. An incremental margin of 44% against a 34% average fits a mix story, because the new revenue is more profitable than the old. It fits fixed-cost leverage just as well, and the reports do not split the 4.7 points between mix, cost and volume. We think mix is the larger part, though the evidence is only the ordering in Seoul Economic Daily's account. It lists the larger share of higher-margin follow-on products first and says efficiency and a better cost structure also supported profitability [13].

The beat is small. The third-quarter target was more than 500 billion won, and 510 billion won clears it by 2% [18], after targets of 300 billion won for the first quarter and 400 billion won for the second [4]. "We have exceeded our target every quarter through the third quarter, proving the profit growth plan we laid out at the start of the year," a Celltrion official said [10]. Three straight beats fit two readings: targets set to be cleared, or a business landing close to plan. The first- and second-quarter actuals would separate them.

The 34% margin also predates the product the company expects to add to fourth-quarter earnings. Omlyclo launched in the US in October [7], after the July-to-September quarter had closed [19], and its place on Optum's private formulary brings reimbursement in the fourth quarter [8]. Celltrion said it expects growth momentum to continue [11].

The fourth quarter is still a weak test of the margin thesis. European tenders and supply schedules concentrate in the second half, with year-end inventory demand expected to rise, according to Seoul Economic Daily [9], so the quarter sits in the same stretch as the one just reported. A first-quarter margin next year back near the 29.3% of a year earlier [23] would say the third quarter owed more to timing than to mix.

What to watch

  • Celltrion's final third-quarter consolidated results against the preliminary 510 billion won and 34% margin.
  • Fourth-quarter operating profit and margin once Optum reimbursement for Omlyclo begins, and whether Denmark reaches its expected share of more than 98% by year-end.
  • Celltrion's first-quarter margin next year, the cleaner test of product mix against second-half tender timing.
