AMD tops $1 trillion market cap as bitcoin trades near $86,559, while oil prices slip

The Nasdaq's record close and a 12.2% week in bitcoin arrived while Brent slipped under $98 and the Fed kept buying Treasury bills. Gasoline drove a third of August's CPI gain, so crude sets the hike path.

What happened

  • Bitcoin traded near $86,559 on Tuesday, up 12.2% over the past week, after clearing the resistance band that had capped it since early September.
  • The Nasdaq Composite closed at a record on Monday, up 2.26% for its best day since June, as Intel jumped 12% and AMD gained about 10% and crossed a $1 trillion market capitalisation.
  • Brent crude briefly slipped below $98 a barrel and WTI under $93, the lowest since September 8, after reports Iran offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within days if Washington eases pressure.
  • The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4% on September 16 in a unanimous 12-0 vote, its first hike since 2023.
  • Total crypto market capitalisation is above $3 trillion and the Crypto Fear & Greed Index reads 79, solidly in greed territory.

Why it matters

  • constraint A buyer at Tuesday's level takes about 1.5 units of charted downside for each unit of upside, with the higher extension target 9.8% above and the last summer support 14.9% below.
  • contradiction Tuesday's equity tape does not show one trade: the Nasdaq added 0.4% and the S&P 500 barely moved while bitcoin broke out, so the shared equity flow is not there and any link runs through oil and Fed policy.
  • exposure With 97 of the top 100 coins up over seven days, a spread of alts is one position sized differently; Solana's 18.2% and Zcash's 36.7% do not diversify each other.
  • capability Because the Fed is absorbing Treasury supply while raising rates, per Decrypt, risk buyers can still fund the positions the hike was meant to discourage.

Gasoline drove a third of August's CPI gain, and the producer price index ran at 5.4% annually that month [12][13]. September's hike answered that inflation [11]. Crude slipping on the Iran reports lowers the input that forced the move. Both the chip trade and the bitcoin bid depend on the same number.

The Fed is raising rates and buying bonds at once. It resumed regular purchases of short-term Treasury bills in December 2025 and has kept buying to hold bank reserves "ample" [14]. Holdings sit near $6.7 trillion against the $9 trillion peak of 2022 [15]. That puts the portfolio $2.3 trillion off the high, about 26% below it, and it is no longer shrinking [4].

Up 12.2% on the week to $86,559 puts bitcoin near $77,150 seven days ago, a gain of roughly $9,400 [1]. The daily chart that produced the breakout sets the next extension targets at $90,763 and $95,074, above a band between $79,673 and $84,144 that price has cleared [17]; losing $79,673 on a pullback points back at $75,436 and then $73,617, the last defended supports from the summer [18].

On Myriad, a prediction market developed by Decrypt's parent company Dastan, traders price 48% odds that bitcoin hits $90,000 this month and 25% odds it reaches $92,500 [19]. The first is 4.0% above Tuesday's price; the second is another 2.8% on top of that, and the odds roughly halve for it [3].

The sequencing complicates a one-trade story. Chipmakers came into Tuesday on their longest winning stretch since April [7], and bitcoin has a trigger of its own, with the 50-day average back above the 200-day [22]. Decrypt does not report cross-asset correlations.

The October 27-28 meeting settles which reading is right [20]. If the Fed hikes again and bitcoin still holds $79,673 while the chip run continues, the common-driver view is wrong and these were two rallies that shared a week. The Fed's median 2026 projection of 4.1% by year-end sits 22.5 basis points above the current midpoint, less than one further quarter-point move [5]. Trump told the U.N. General Assembly he expects a deal with Iran "right after the election," referring to November's midterms [9].

What to watch

  • Saudi Arabia is working to restart its East-West pipeline by the weekend, the next test of whether the crude slide holds.
  • The Altcoin Season Index at 49 still has bitcoin leading; a move above it would say the bid has spread to the rest of the top 100.
