Apple sends AirPods beta build 9B5043a to eight listed versions without change notes
Apple released beta firmware build 9B5043a for AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Max 2 and other models. It has not said what changed, so opting in to the developer or public beta means installing with no list of changes to check against.
The Product Desk

The beta firmware option appears for AirPods connected to an iPhone, iPad or Mac running iOS 26, iPadOS 26 or macOS 26 or later. Apple's steps say to wait at least 30 minutes for the firmware to update, for AirPods and AirPods Pro in the case and for AirPods Max on its cable.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| iOS, iPadOS or macOS needed, or later | 26 OS version | reports vary: 26–27.2 | 8 |
| AirPods Pro wait, at least | 30 minutes | 10 | |
| AirPods Max wait, at least | 30 minutes | 12 |
What happened
- 9to5Mac's list has eight entries, with AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 4 and AirPods 5 each appearing twice as variants.
- The AirPods firmware arrived the same day as developer beta 4 of iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, macOS 27.2 and other Apple operating system betas.
- Public testers join from the AirPods settings screen on an iPhone by enabling the beta option.
- AirPods Max 2 has no case, so Apple's update steps for it have the charging cable go into the bottom-right earphone.
Why it matters
- contradiction 9to5Mac treats the contents as something Apple has yet to detail, while MacRumors says Apple does not offer notes for AirPods betas at all. A team waiting for a changelog before deciding should plan as if none is coming.
- decision Opting in is a decision about one specific pair of earbuds, because the only check Apple's steps offer afterward is the firmware version.
- constraint All eight listings share one build, so a bug report that cites 9B5043a alone cannot say which hardware to look at. Testers will need to name the model as well.
Someone with AirPods Pro 3 turns on the beta toggle and puts the pair in the case. There is no software update option for AirPods as there is for other Apple devices, MacRumors reported [9]. The firmware comes down when the AirPods are connected to an Apple device and to power [9].
Apple's own instructions tell the user to wait at least 30 minutes with the lid closed and the case plugged in [10]. MacRumors says it can take a few hours [9]. A team scheduling an install should plan on the longer figure.
MacRumors names five models and 9to5Mac lists eight [c4, c2]. The difference is variants: AirPods Pro 2 appears in Lightning and USB-C versions, AirPods 4 with and without ANC, and AirPods 5 again with the wireless charging case [13].
Here's what the instructions have a user do: connect to power, close the lid, wait. The last step is to check the firmware version again [11]. That is the only result a tester can confirm. A test plan normally starts from a list of changes, and here the starting point is the build number 9B5043a [3].
We think most owners should leave the toggle off and wait for release firmware. The tradeoff is lead time: a team that wants an early look has to accept testing without a list of changes.
Two facts settle it for everyone else: whether you can name one behavior you would check, and whether the pair is a spare. A named behavior on a spare pair is the only combination that produces a result. Record the build, install, read the build again [11], and test that one behavior. A named behavior on your only pair waits until a spare exists. With no behavior to name, the install proves nothing on either kind of pair, so the toggle stays off.
What to watch
- Any Apple description of what build 9B5043a contains.
- Whether a later build reaches all eight listed versions or only some of them.
- The iOS 27.2 developer beta 4 release notes, in case they mention AirPods.
