Apple enters Samsung's foldable category seven years late at $1,999
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB and runs to $3,199 for 2TB, making it the most expensive iPhone at launch, and it ships on October 23 into a category Samsung has led since 2019.

What happened
- Apple announced the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, its first foldable phone and its entry into a category Samsung opened with the original Galaxy Fold roughly seven years earlier.
- The Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB and runs to $3,199 for a 2TB configuration, with preorders opening October 16 and shipping on October 23 in Star White and Night Sky.
- It is a book-style foldable with a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner display, the largest ever placed on an iPhone, both OLED at 120Hz and 3,000 nits peak brightness.
- The device weighs 254 grams, measures 5.2mm unfolded, is IP68 rated, and drops Face ID in favour of Touch ID embedded in the power button.
- CryptoBriefing reports the Duo will be judged against Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Google's latest Pixel Fold, both of which have had multiple generations of hardware and software revision.

Why it matters
- cost The buyer who wants 2TB pays $1,200 above the base price for 1,792 gigabytes of flash, roughly 67 cents a gigabyte, and that step decides what the Duo contributes per handset far more than any share number does.
- constraint A launch price above a standard Pro Max, combined with 55 extra grams, keeps the Duo's addressable buyer at the top of Apple's existing base no matter how well iMessage and iCloud travel.
- decision Samsung and Google now have to set their next foldable prices against a $1,999 competitor with Apple's distribution, and the Z Fold 8 and current Pixel Fold generations were priced before that reference existed.
- contradiction CryptoBriefing reports the segment has never reached true mass adoption and also that Apple's entry changes the calculus for every competitor, and without volumes the second claim cannot be checked against the first.
Between the $1,999 base and the $3,199 top sits $1,200 [1], and what it buys is 1,792 gigabytes of flash, or about 67 cents a gigabyte [2]. The 2TB configuration therefore costs 1.6 times the 256GB one [7]. For anyone modelling Apple's average selling price, the split between those two ends matters more than the unit total. The CryptoBriefing report does not give a build volume [8].
The physical specification narrows the buyer. At 254 grams against roughly 199 for a standard iPhone 16 Pro, the Duo adds 55 grams, about 28 percent [13][14][3]. In exchange the 7.6-inch inner panel gives close to twice the area of the 5.4-inch outer one, because Apple held both screens at 1.4:1 [8][10][4]. Face ID is gone, replaced by Touch ID in the power button [15].
CryptoBriefing writes that Samsung "has dominated the space largely by default" [21], with Google's Pixel Fold and Chinese makers including Huawei and Xiaomi selling alternatives in select markets [23], and reports that the segment has grown steadily without reaching true mass adoption [20]. Both of those can be true and still leave open whether Apple's entry moves units. A category that has not gone mass at Samsung's prices does not obviously go mass at $1,999 [4].
The conversion case: iMessage, AirDrop, iCloud and the Mac and iPad integration pull a slice of the installed base that would never have bought a Samsung foldable [22], and panel and hinge orders across the supply base reprice on Apple volumes. The halo case: the Duo sells modestly, lifts the iPhone average selling price, and Samsung keeps its unit lead while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the current Pixel Fold hold their generational advantage on hardware and software [18]. The hardware case: the precision hinge and the nano-texture coating meant to hide the crease [17] disappoint in the first return cycle, and Apple sits out a generation.
The second is the one the published evidence supports. Start with a $1,999 entry price already above a standard Pro Max [19], 55 grams of extra weight [3], the loss of Face ID [15], and seven days between preorder on October 16 and shipping on October 23 [5]. Those four describe a device sold to the top of Apple's own base at the highest launch price it has ever asked for a phone [19]. Two findings would break that conclusion: carrier subsidies that put the Duo's monthly cost within reach of a Pro Max buyer, or first-quarter shipment estimates in the multiple millions.
What to watch
- Whether Samsung prices its next Galaxy Z Fold above or below the Duo's $1,999 base once Apple's device is on shelves.
- When Apple Pencil support actually arrives, since CryptoBriefing reports the Duo will only eventually work with it.
- Teardowns that name the hinge and panel suppliers, the first hard component data anyone will have on this device.
