XWorm's 46 plugins now include one that drives a victim's logged-in browser

Netskope reports XWorm's plugin count rose from 35 in July 2025 to 46 in October 2026, adding GPS, microphone and browser-session plugins. Netskope says one of them hijacks logged-in sessions and bypasses MFA entirely.

What happened

  • XWorm is a Windows RAT first observed in 2022, with keylogging, screenshot capture, webcam access and payload execution already in its base feature set.
  • Netskope counted more than 1,200 XWorm incidents across 100 organizations in the third quarter.
  • Netskope says the Maps plugin returns GPS location without a user prompt and the Microphone plugin streams live audio from the victim's device.
  • HBrowser input travels as command-and-control commands over XWorm's standard AES-encrypted channel and executes on the victim's system, according to Netskope.

Why it matters

  • constraint Password and MFA controls act at login, and this path begins after it, so they cannot be the layer that stops HBrowser. Detection has to sit on the endpoint.
  • decision Scoping an XWorm cleanup now means listing every account open in the browser during the infection, since the operator needs no stolen credential to use them.
  • exposure An infected laptop now gives the operator the user's whereabouts and nearby conversations as well as the user's accounts.

The operator's side of HBrowser is plain. It receives a continuous stream of screenshots, and the victim machine executes each input the operator sends in the active browser window [8]. Netskope calls the result a full remote browser session. "Every authenticated tab is accessible, bypassing the need for logging in and dealing with MFA," Netskope said [9].

In our view, the claim that HBrowser bypasses MFA stands, on one condition. The plugin runs on the victim's system [7], so the host must already be infected. Once it is, Netskope says the operator needs no credential [5]. The SecurityWeek summary does not say how XWorm reaches hosts, whether one group or several operate it, or which indicators to hunt for. Webcam capture is not new; the base RAT already offered it [1].

The growth looks like sustained development. The net addition is 11 plugins, about 31% on the July 2025 base [13]. That base sits one month after the builder was cracked in June 2025 and one month before the 6.4 source leaked in August 2025 [12]. Every added plugin therefore arrived while the cracked builder was public [12]. Netskope ties the rise in XWorm activity to that builder release [10], and its forecast is direct. "Since its builder and source code were leaked, we expect continued upgrades and use of this toolkit," Netskope said [11].

What to watch

  • Indicators or detection guidance for HBrowser traffic, and any account of how XWorm reaches hosts, from Netskope or other vendors.
  • Independent confirmation of Netskope's third-quarter count of 1,200 incidents across 100 organizations.
  • Netskope's next plugin count after the 46 it reported for October 2026.
