A few minutes of unfilled quiet after learning beat an absorbing task in two reviews
The reviews pooled dozens of studies and found better retention after several minutes of quiet than after a demanding task, though one of them reported the advantage was smallest in healthy younger adults.

Newly formed memories become more stable over the minutes and hours after learning, a process called consolidation [2]. The explanation researchers favor for the rest effect is that quiet leaves the brain with fewer competing demands and more opportunity to reactivate what it has just taken in [6]. Scientific American reports the physiological evidence as an association: greater coordination between the hippocampus and areas of the cortex during post-learning rest goes with better memory later [7].
That sits inside a broader claim, the opportunistic consolidation hypothesis, which holds that the brain uses periods with little new information or interference to stabilize recent learning, whether that period is overnight sleep, a short bout of sleep or quiet wakeful rest [16]. Decades of work established that sleep supports consolidation, and some researchers now treat it as one part of that broader process instead of an entirely distinct memory state [17].
Where the interference comes from is still uncertain [18]. In one experiment a post-learning task damaged retention more than rest did, and the task's attentional demands did not explain the difference [8]. On that evidence, picking a gentler thing to do in the gap is not the fix it sounds like.
The consolidation window can be disrupted by internal mental activity as well as by external stimulation [19]. Vividness tracked with the damage: participants who reported the most vivid thoughts tended to show the greater disruption [10]. Achieving genuine quiet rest is difficult, Scientific American writes [20].
The subgroup result is where the workplace case weakens. One of the reviews found the advantage weaker in healthy younger adults [3], who make up much of any workplace training audience [1]. The magazine calls the area unsettled and says translating laboratory findings into classrooms, offices and other everyday settings is difficult [11]. Individual studies have sometimes failed to reproduce the expected benefit [12].
The anxiety result carries its own caveats. In adults without clinical anxiety, moderate anxiety during quiet rest was associated with poorer consolidation, while lower and higher levels left new memories relatively intact [13]. That same study found only a modest overall advantage for rest and no significant difference in its main measure of recognition sensitivity [14], and Scientific American says the anxiety finding needs further investigation [15]. The magazine also writes that exam pressure and a full inbox may make effective rest harder to achieve [21].
What to watch
- A replication run in an actual classroom or office, reporting a pooled effect size for working-age adults, would decide whether the schedule argument survives outside the lab.
- A retest of the moderate-anxiety link in a study powered on recognition sensitivity, the measure that came out flat.
- Any review that publishes separate effect estimates by age group instead of one pooled number.
