Vercel's free Glyph Cluster model may hand your prompts to an unnamed provider for training
Vercel offers the Glyph Cluster stealth model free on AI Gateway, but prompts and responses may be used for training and ZDR is unavailable. Any trial is a data-governance decision first, so one dev.to plan limits testing to public, non-sensitive material.
The Engineer · Build desk

What happened
- Access is limited to teams on Vercel's Pro and Enterprise plans that have purchased AI Gateway credits, and the free pricing lasts only for the stealth period.
- Vercel's model page lists Glyph Cluster as anonymous, so the provider that may retain prompts and outputs is not publicly identified.
- Vercel pitches it for coding and long-context reasoning, but input is text only, tools are limited to defined functions, and structured outputs are not supported.
- The Gateway model listing has a "No Training" indicator that the Stealth provider row lacks, a mismatch a dev.to evaluation plan calls a conflict in Vercel's own signals.
Compiled by The EngineerSomething wrong? How this is made
Why it matters
- decision Every evaluation set has to be built from public or owned non-sensitive material, and a team that cannot represent its workload that way has no safe way to test the model at all.
- exposure Two CLI commands put the model inside Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, so the fastest trial path is also the easiest way to send a private repository to an unnamed provider.
- constraint Without structured outputs, the model is unfit for payments, permission checks and other flows that need a schema-validated response, whatever it costs.
- cost A cost case built on the free tier expires with the stealth period, and the terms behind it can change before then.
AI Gateway lists Zero Data Retention support among its built-in features [13]. Vercel's October 7 changelog makes Glyph Cluster the exception: ZDR is not available for it [11][2]. The changelog does not say how the gateway feature treats a request routed to a model without ZDR.
The training signal has a second wrinkle. The dev.to plan's author treats the changelog warning as the operative constraint and recommends asking Vercel before relying on a different reading [6]. Read literally, a Stealth row without a "No Training" mark agrees with the changelog. Either way, the changelog is the strictest published wording, and testing should follow it [2].
The plan also warns that stealth access and its terms can change [9]. Approval therefore covers an unnamed provider [14] on terms that can move after sign-off.
The dev.to plan draws the test boundary tightly. Only public material, or non-sensitive examples the team owns and may send, goes to the model. Private repositories, customer data, access tokens, incident reports, unreleased designs and real support conversations stay out [7]. Redaction does not qualify, because snippets can keep context that identifies a customer or exposes implementation details [7]. "A model that cannot be safely evaluated for your workload is not a candidate for that workload yet," the author wrote [8]. I'd keep that cut, even though private code heads the excluded list for a model Vercel sells on coding [7][3].
The quickest integration runs straight through it. Vercel's coding-agent setup is a CLI install, `vercel ai-gateway setup`, and a selection of `stealth/glyph-cluster` inside Claude Code, Codex or Cursor [5]. An agent pointed at a private repository is exactly the case the plan excludes [7]. Its alternative is a development-only route or a local script. The key stays server-side in an environment variable, never in a browser bundle or a committed file [16].
Function calling does not close the structured-output gap, the plan notes [12]. It keeps payments, permission decisions, automatic customer-facing actions and schema-validated flows out of the first round [15]. Its starter tasks are explaining a public build failure, comparing two owned implementation plans, and patching a small sample repository with no secrets [15]. Expected outcomes are written before either model runs. They include a seeded bug, a clean sample and a case where the right answer is to ask for more context [17].
A pass on that set is a result about a sample repository. It transfers to private code only as far as the sample resembles the code a team ships, and the boundary rules out checking that against the real thing. The author wrote that free pricing should not be what gates a move to production [10].
What to watch
- Vercel clarifying the "No Training" indicator for the Stealth provider row; a statement that contradicts the changelog would reopen the training question.
- The end of the stealth period: a named provider, a price, or ZDR availability would each change the governance call.
- Any revision to the stealth terms before then, since the test boundary in the dev.to plan rests on the current changelog wording.

Glyph Cluster is a reasoning model for coding and long-context analysis, handling planning, synthesis, quantitative reasoning, and comparing material across large inputs; for coding it can review code, explain failures, debug, and propose changes.

Glyph Cluster takes text input only, with no image or file input; tool use is limited to function tools you define, and structured outputs are not supported.

The model name is stealth/glyph-cluster; it can be called through the AI SDK or OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions and Responses APIs, or used in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other agents after running npm i -g vercel@latest and vercel ai-gateway setup, then selecting stealth/glyph-cluster.

The AI Gateway model listing has a 'No Training' indicator, but its Stealth provider row does not carry that marking; the author calls this a conflict in the vendor's own published signals, treats the changelog warning as the operative constraint, and advises asking Vercel for clarification before relying on a different interpretation.

The test should use only public material or non-sensitive examples the team owns and is allowed to send; no private repository, customer data, access tokens, incident reports, unreleased designs, or real support conversations; redaction does not make a sensitive prompt safe because snippets can retain context that identifies a customer or exposes implementation details.

The Glyph Cluster model page calls the model anonymous, meaning the provider is not identified on the public page, and says prompts and outputs may be retained by the provider.

Good first tasks are explaining a public build failure, comparing two owned non-sensitive implementation plans, or suggesting a patch against a small sample repository with no secrets; avoid automatic customer-facing actions, permission decisions, payments, or any flow that needs a schema-validated response.

Keep the test behind a development-only route or a local script, using a server-side key in an environment variable, never a browser bundle or committed file.

Write expected outcomes before running either model; for code review, include a seeded bug with a known fix, an innocuous code sample with no defect, and a case where the right answer is to ask for more context.
