Samsung Wallet's USDC rollout to 82 million Galaxy phones starts as a remittance service

Samsung Wallet will make USDC its default dollar stablecoin on 82 million eligible U.S. Galaxy devices from late October. The deal gives Circle the default slot and Coinbase custody of the balances, while licensed partner Bastion keeps the customer records and the compliance work.

What happened

  • Transfers will reach bank accounts in more than 60 countries, with Bastion converting USDC and paying out in local currency through regulated partners.
  • Solana and Sui will carry the transfers, and each one needs biometric approval from a registered device.
  • Online and in-store stablecoin payments, and launches in other markets, are still listed as planned capabilities.
  • Samsung offered Coinbase One, a paid membership with trading-fee cuts, to more than 75 million U.S. Galaxy owners in October 2025.

Why it matters

  • exposure Bastion runs identity checks and transaction screening for an audience of up to 82 million eligible devices. If the feature fails on compliance, the problem lands on Bastion first.
  • constraint Coinbase never meets the user in this product. Its gain is limited to the USDC that Galaxy owners choose to top up and leave in Prime Vault.
  • constraint The user base will grow country by country as licences arrive, because reach outside the U.S. depends on local regulatory approval.
  • precedent Galaxy owners who top up will get USDC without choosing it. That gives stablecoin issuers a reason to compete for phone makers' default settings in each new market.

Four companies sit behind each balance. Samsung supplies the interface, the same one that already holds cards, boarding passes and IDs [16]. Circle issues the token, backed by cash, short-term Treasuries and overnight reverse repurchase agreements, with monthly independent attestations of whether reserves cover supply [9]. Bastion is the licensed custodian and money transmitter [7]. It keeps the individual account records, processes transfers and runs identity checks and transaction screening [8]. Coinbase holds the coins as Bastion's sub-custodian through Coinbase Prime Vault, using its New York State Department of Financial Services-qualified custody [7]. The user installs no crypto app and manages no private keys [5].

Coinbase's gain here is custody of the balances. The account relationship sits with Bastion [8]. Samsung has put the money-transmission licensing with Bastion too, and further markets are planned subject to local regulatory requirements [7][14].

"When a Samsung Wallet user tops up their stablecoin balance, USDC will appear automatically as the default dollar stablecoin," Alec Lovett, Coinbase's head of infrastructure products, said in the Oct. 8 announcement [3][4]. The default applies at the top-up, so the user still has to decide to move money in. The report does not include financial terms for the default placement, the custody or the payouts.

The 82 million eligible devices [2] are about 12 times the nearly 7 million wallets Coinbase says hold USDC [11][17]. Samsung and Coinbase have used this audience before: Coinbase One access went to more than 75 million U.S. Galaxy owners in October 2025 [12]. Both figures count who can sign up.

Several outcomes fit the launch. Galaxy owners who park dollars in the wallet would grow the balance held in Prime Vault. Those who top up, send to a bank account in one of the more than 60 countries and keep nothing back would make it a remittance product, with Bastion converting into local currency [6]. A large share of the 82 million may never top up at all.

I think the remittance case is the likeliest for the first year. Online and in-store stablecoin payments remain planned capabilities [14], and a dollar balance with nowhere to spend it at home tends to get sent. The counter-case is USDC's own growth. Circulation rose 72% in 2025 to $75.3 billion, from roughly $43.8 billion [10][18]. Wallets holding it went from about 4.4 million to nearly 7 million [21][11], all without a phone maker's default.

One percent of year-end circulation is $753 million [19], or about $9 for each eligible device [20]. A disclosed Samsung Wallet balance well above that would mean Galaxy owners are storing dollars, and the remittance view would be wrong. Volume on the rails is already large: the Solana Foundation cited more than $5.25 trillion of stablecoin volume on Solana during 2026 [15].

What to watch

  • A launch date for online and in-store stablecoin payments in Samsung Wallet, the feature that would let a U.S. balance be spent at home.
  • The first reported figure for transfer volume from Samsung Wallet to bank accounts in the 60-plus payout countries.
  • Which country Samsung adds after the U.S., and whether Bastion holds the custody and money-transmission licences there.
